DARWEN is set to be in the spotlight for the county's budding young actors, with plans for a drama academy in the town.

East Lancashire panto king George Critchley is behind the Academy for Talent planned for Darwen Library Theatre.

George, who has a long history in the world of showbusiness, wants to set up his new venture PMA Productions early next year.

The academy will produce shows and be represented by his agency, PMA Management, to pitch the young actors to theatre production and TV bosses.

Youngsters from Darwen and the rest of Lancashire will be able to audition for a place at the academy from March.

George, who says he has an "eye for talent", wants to provide a stepping stone to help young actors make it in the entertainment industry.

He said: "When I was a child my dad who was a farmer always made fun of me for wanting to be an actor. I want to help people achieve their dreams.

"I want to put Darwen on the map by using the fantastic facilities in the Library Theatre. This service will be for helping children and adults to succeed."

George, who is currently directing rehearsals for Cinderella at Oswaldtwistle Civic Hall and Colne Municipal Theatre, starring Blue Peter's Dan and Jeff, hopes to draft in experts from the industry to offer advice to his students.

He said traditional acting and singing would be taught alongside street dancing and even clown skills to broaden new actors' talents.

George added: "This academy is not for people who simply want a hobby but for those who want to have a career in the acting world.

"I have an eye for talent and anyone who is good will do well. They will be supported by my agency and will be put forward for theatre and television parts as well as appearing in my shows.

"I have been wanting to for this for such a long time. I am excited."

Dates for auditions will be released next year.
