MOTORISTS are being warned of road closures as Whalley prepares for its annual Dickensian celebration.

Shops staff will deck themselves in Victorian attire, while brass bands, steam organs, fire-eaters, jugglers and school choirs line the streets for Pickwick night.

The festive fair will be held on Thursday, December 7 to raise money for East Lancashire charities and is part of the town's christmas extravaganza celebrations.

The event begins at 6pm and shops will stay open until 9pm. During this time King Street will close between Station Road and Accrington Road.

Only accident and emergency vehicles will have access to thetown centre during these hours. Bus routes will also be affected.

Parking will be available at Oakhill College in Wiswell Lane and the Railway Sidings in Station Road.

Ribble Valley Council chief executive, David Morris, said: "The road closure has been implemented in Whalley during Pickwick night for the last few years.

"It seems to have worked extremely well and as a result the council, at the request of organisers and police, has made a similar order for this year's event.

"It is appreciated the arrangements may cause some inconvenience, but the safety of residents and visitors is of paramount importance."
