AN AVENUE of daffodils has been planted by friends as a memorial to Sayrah and Sophia Riaz, who died in the Accrington fire tragedy.

Pupils at Moorhead spent two days planting the bulbs along the main entrance road to the school. When they flower in spring, they will serve as a reminder of the popular students.

Sayrah, 16, Sophia, 15, Alicia, 10, Hannah, three, and their mother, 39-year-old Caneze Riaz were killed in the blaze at their Tremellen Street home in Accrington earlier this month.

A memorial ceremony will also be held at the school at 6pm next Wednesday in partnership with Hyndburn Park Primary School.

Moorhead's head teacher Andrew Bateman said: "There is a continued sadness in the school community over the tragic deaths of the girls and the pupils wanted to do something to remember them by."

The body of father Mohammed, seen as the prime suspect behind the fatal blaze, was flown back to Pakistan last Saturday, at his family's request.
