I REMEMBER reading The Canterbury Tales at university and hating it.

But, after seeing the production currently playing at The Lowry I am now able to look at Chaucer’s work through fresh eyes.

The humour, heartache and wisdom that is contained in these 14th century tales is laid bare for all to see in an adptatiion for the Internet age.

If someone had said to me at 19 man of these tales were laugh out loud funny I would have laughed at them, but Mike Poulton has created something that is positively Pythonesque in places.

But what do you expect from a company like Northern Broadsides, a company who could, quite possibly, breathe life into a dodo? This multi-talented ensemble have joined forces with the New Vic Theatre to create a production that engages and engrosses in equal measure.

The Canterbury Tales also reminds us that despite the huge advances in technology we’ve seen over the years, human beings haven’t changed at all.

People still drink too much, lust after one another and break wind in bed.

Simply stunning - once again Northern Broadsides have scored another direct hit.
