Spear of Destiny are coming to Darwen as part of the band’s Singles Tour. We spoke to frontman Kirk Brandon.

KIRK Brandon can’t explain it, but he’s developed a growing affinity with Darwen.

As part of Dead Men Walking he’s played a number of sell-out shows at the Library Theatre (one of which was filmed for a live DVD).

And now he’s coming back with Spear of Destiny.

“It’s not on the regular rock and roll circuit,” he said, “but there’s something about the place. The Library Theatre is such an intimate venue, it’s like playing in someone’s front room and you get a really great atmosphere. It’s a cool place.”

Next Saturday is a night that Spear of Destiny fans have been asking for for years.

“We are just going to be playing all the singles,” said Kirk. “Fans have been suggesting it for ages and I thought about it and decided to do it.”

With a full band including Theatre of Hate saxophonist John Lennard, Kirk will be performing all the singles including Liberator, Never Take Me Alive and The Traveller.

“I’ve realised that we never played The Traveller live before even though it was a minor hit,” said Kirk.

“Life didn’t stop in 1990 so we’ll also be playing all our more recent single releases.

“With the singles I’m deliberately not trying to take away from the original or recreate them, We’ll be staying a close to the original idea as possible.”

Kirk is as passionate about his music now as when he first came on to prominence in the Eighties.

“I never take things for granted,” he said. “With music you should go out there and give your best every time for the fans so I never tire of singing songs like Liberator.”

One new song will feature in the show — the band’s latest single Berlin, Berlin taken from their forthcoming album which is released in November.

“It’s been releaased as a single so it’s got to be part of the set,” said Kirk.
