A man has been arrested after a wild deer was allegedly shot with a crossbow, police said.

Devon and Cornwall Police and the RSPCA were called to Plymbridge in Plymouth, Devon, yesterday to reports that the animal had been shot with the weapon.

Officers arrested a man in possession of a crossbow. He is now helping both police and the RSPCA with their inquiries.

A police spokesman said: "It is possible that the deer has been wounded and is still alive.

"Efforts are being made by the police and RSPCA to track and locate the deer so that it can be treated for any injuries sustained.

"It is requested that if any member of the public sees a deer in the Plymbridge/ Leigham/ Wrigley's factory area with an injury consistent with having being hit by a crossbow bolt, they note the location of the deer and contact Devon and Cornwall Police on 101."
