Here Chums the bride... viewers have seen a marriage as well as births as TV's Call The Midwife was given a joyous finale.

The popular BBC One series featured the wedding of aristocratic midwife Camilla "Chummy" Cholmondely-Browne, played by comic actress Miranda Hart.

She has been courting Pc Noakes (Ben Caplan) in the hit drama about nurses in the East End of London, despite opposition from her wealthy family.

The pair met when Chummy knocked Noakes off his feet while she learned to ride a bicycle.

Their wedding marked the finale of what has been a runaway success for the BBC One Sunday night drama, which was recommissioned for a second series after proving to be an instant hit with audiences of around nine million.

BBC bosses had something of a midwife crisis after ITV chiefs scheduled an edition of Coronation Street in the same 8pm slot. But they decided to shift Call The Midwife to a later time to avoid the clash.

The series is based on the best-selling memoirs of midwife Jennifer Worth.

Worth, who died of cancer last year, put forward Hart for the role of her friend Chummy after watching an episode of Hart's sitcom Miranda.
