Sigourney Weaver has revealed plot details for the new Ghostbusters 3 movie.

The 64-year-old actress - who played musician Dana Barrett in the first two films - spoke to Vanity Fair as part of a feature to mark the 30th anniversary of the cult 80s hit.

Sigourney revealed she had spoken to Ivan Reitman about the next instalment and wanted her character's adult son to become a Ghostbuster.

She told the magazine: "I said, I have one condition. I want my son Oscar [from Ghostbusters 2] to be a Ghostbuster, and he said, 'We've already done that'."

The new instalment has been in the works for several years and is thought to feature a new generation of Ghostbusters, with cameos from the original cast.

Sadly Harold Ramis, who played Egon Spengler and co-wrote the first film, died in February 2014 aged 69, and Bill Murray is yet to confirm his appearance in the sequel.

But Dan Aykroyd, Rick Moranis and Ernie Hudson are all keen to reprise their roles.

Ivan, who co-wrote, produced and directed the original movie recently revealed he will not direct the sequel, but is still heavily involved.

Etan Cohen, whose writing credits include Men in Black 3 and Tropic Thunder, is working on the screenplay.

He told Vanity Fair he and Ivan are "together for hours every week, working on it really closely." He added that Dan is acting as an overseeing Ghostbusters writer emeritus: "No one can speak the language of Ghostbusters like he can."

Asked whether a third Ghostbusters film could succeed without Bill Murray, Etan said: "Absolutely everyone wants Bill Murray. But everyone has great faith in the franchise."
