Chris Moyles has been ruled out of hosting a daily late night slot on BBC Radio 1 after station bosses handed the role to a pair of newcomers, raising a question mark about his future at the station.

The motormouth presenter has been without a programme since he handed over his breakfast show to Nick Grimshaw in September after eight-and-a-half years.

There had been speculation the DJ - who is still under contract to Radio 1 - would be given a 10pm to midnight show during the week.

However, station controller Ben Cooper has announced the programme will instead be hosted by Phil Taggart and Alice Levine.

Taggart has already served as a stand-in presenter, while Levine is new to the station. Cooper has also confirmed that Annie Mac will be the sole host of the Sunday night show which she used to co-present with Grimmy.

The newly announced roles mean Moyles has an uncertain future at the station, as there are now few slots available for him to move into with recent changes across the station's schedule.

He has been on unpaid leave since leaving his breakfast programme and while off air he has toured in a production of Jesus Christ Superstar, playing King Herod. He has also released an album of spoof tracks.

Moyles commanded the station's biggest audience with the flagship breakfast show, but as he left the programme his audience had dipped to its lowest level for six years with 6.73 million listeners. He had been overtaken by Radio 4's Today programme.

A station spokesman said there would be further talks with Moyles in the New Year about work. He said: "We will be meeting with Chris in January to discuss possible future projects with him on Radio 1."
