US TV orders third X Factor series
TV bosses have ordered a further series of the US version of The X Factor - which will raise doubts about whether Simon Cowell plans to return to the UK series.
American network Fox has booked a third run for the show which also features mentors Demi Lovato, LA Reid and Britney Spears.
In the UK, ratings have faltered with audiences down on recent years and on Saturday the show found itself more than a million viewers behind BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing for a second consecutive week.
Cowell said he "couldn't be happier" about the newly commissioned series.
"I am so proud of the show and the team who have made it this season.
"Our main commitment will always be to find great talent, and let's not forget, we are now days away from our first live shows. The gloves are off. Expect fireworks."
Mike Darnell, Fox's president of alternative entertainment, said: "This season, Simon and the producers of The X Factor took an already strong show and made it absolutely fantastic."
Cowell left the UK version of the show after its 2010 run to launch the US series, with Gary Barlow taking on the UK role as head judge.
