South Ribble's gay MP David Borrow, who has married' his long-term partner, plans to mark their civil partnership with a party for family and friends in his constituency.

Mr Borrow, 54, became the country's first MP to have a civil union when he tied the knot with partner John Garland, 43, on Saturday.

They had originally planned to wed' several months ago but postponed it due to media attention.

The two are now hoping to secure a venue in Leyland for a celebratory bash in July.

Mr Borrow, who was re-elected as the MP for South Ribble last year, said: "We know where we want it but we've got to finalise the plans.

"All of our friends and family will be invited and it will a big party."

Mr Borrow's sisters, Stacey and Lesley, attended the ceremony at Preston Registry Office, Bow Street, along with other relatives. The group then went for a celebratory meal at Barton Grange Hotel.

Mr Borrow said: "It was a lovely day and we are both very pleased to use the new civil partnership act to give our relationship proper legal recognition.

"The registry office staff made us feel very welcome and it was a lovely ceremony."

Civil partnerships are allowed under new legislation which means two people of the same sex can form a union by signing a registration document. It also provides same sex couples legal benefits on a par with marriages between opposite sex couples.
