Roberts ready to fight for his shirt
GOAL HEROES: Roque Santa Cruz and Jason Roberts
GOAL HEROES: Roque Santa Cruz and Jason Roberts

IN-FORM striker Jason Roberts has warned his rivals: I won't give up my place in the team without a fight.

The former Wigan frontman scored a vital goal against his old club at the weekend, which helped to keep alive Blackburn Rovers' hopes of qualifying for Europe via the Intertoto Cup.

It was a sweet moment for Roberts, who has cut a frustrated figure at times this season, due to his lack of starts in the Premier League.

But now that the 30-year-old has finally got the shirt, he seems determined to make it difficult for manager Mark Hughes to leave him out during the run-in.

The Grenada international said: "We've got some really good strikers here so you've got to be on top of your game all the time.

"But if you look at my record since I've been here, when I have played, and I've played consistently, I have scored goals, and I have caused the opposition problems, so hopefully there is more of that to come.

"I still feel there is a lot more to come from me at this football club.

"If you play games then you improve and get your timing back, and I'm feeling better with every game, and every minute, I play.

"Hopefully a few more opportunities will come my way between now and the end of the season."

At one point earlier in the season, Roberts became so disillusioned with life on the substitutes' bench at Blackburn that he felt the need to hand in a transfer request, which was instantly rejected by Hughes and the Rovers board.

Now three months on, the smile is back on Roberts' face again, although question marks still remain regarding his long-term future at Ewood Park.

"I think everyone is happier when they are playing," said the striker.

"I'm sure if you spoke to anyone here they would all say the same.

"As long as I'm playing, I'm on top of the world.

"As for where my future lies, I don't know. To a certain extent that situation is out of my hands.

"All I can do is try to show people what I can do, and hopefully I showed them a bit more (at the weekend).

"It's just nice for me that I'm getting an opportunity now and whatever has happened in the past, is in the past for me.

"If the manager continues to give me an opportunity, then I will always try my best for the team, like I've always done."

Roberts' fourth goal of the season came at a crucial time in the game for Rovers, who were already a man down at that stage following the early dismissal of Chris Samba.

But Roberts' cool finish on the stroke of half-time, sandwiched in between two headed goals from the prolific Roque Santa Cruz, ensured Hughes' side went on to seal a vital 3-1 victory.

Roberts added: "I was really pleased with the goal.

"It was a great flick from Roque and, having played with him for 90 minutes at West Ham last week, I thought we improved again as a partnership.

"His flick was really good, I managed to get on the end of it, and, with Chris Kirkland being a big guy, I just tried to keep it low and see what happened, and, luckily for me, it went through his legs.

"It was a great team effort from everyone. After having a man sent off so early, I thought it was an unbelievable performance."

I would pick Jason Roberts before McCarthy every time.We can't afford to carry luxury players like McCarthy if the club are serious about getting into the UEFA Cup. Ok, he may not be the fans favourite but you can't fault the lads strength, passion and will to battle for the team cause. We haven't seen the best of a Roberts/ Santa Cruz partnership yet.

I would agree with this Roberts could just be our secret weapon now & until the end of season. Unfortunatly,Bennie just hasn't been at it this season & I'm sure he would be the first to admit that but I can see MH's thinking for playing Bennie simply because he his quality & can be the differance when he is on song.
MH as shown that he his not afraid to drop the big name players thus allowing Roberts to come in & take his chance which is excellent for the team.

Roberts & Cruz Saturday were excellent.albeit against a poor Wigan team but the pair complimented each other well.

I for one dont wish to see Bennie leave because he his a big game player when his head is together.

We need all our big players to stay at Ewood(Bentley etc) & to hopefully add some more real quality in pre season - Bradley etc.

I think Roberts & Cruz(injuries aside) will be the favoured partnership until the end of season unless of course Benni really kicks **** in training!!

I dont mind who plays so long as they are doing the business on the pitch!!

Anyone for a 1-2 for BRFC Saturday at Reading?

Lets no get carried away with Roberts.
I hope he has an awesome finsish so we can cash in on him.
He was like a pub player against a better team like West Ham.
He scores against poor sides and struggles against decent sides.
Reading is a must win because we'l get nothing off Liverpool and Man United

We've been linked with Cisse from Marseille. He's decent and pacey, would compliment Santa Cruz and we'd then have 2 14 PL strikers a season, add to that Michael Bradley and we'll we whacking in over 50 goals next season in the league!! :D

to agree woody, whats happened to benni, like ive said many times this is the true test for a manager getting the best out of players who seemingly loose form or confidence. thing about saturday santa and jr played reasonably close to each other and played off each other, wheras when benni plays with santa he drops way to deep or drifts out wide to often some players just dont gel with each other maybe its the case with benni and santa.
hughsie at the moment has got to go with the guys in possession hopefully a good result for us saturday and a everton defeat then all of a sudden the 5th spot door starts to creak open a little.
well youve go to hope havnt you.

Who's Michael Bradley?
I think Benni has been much-improved recently & thats probably the first decent game Roberts has had when he's started.

Michael Bradley is a 22 year old attacking midfielder who plays in the Dutch league for Heerenveen. Last i checked he'd scored 15 goals this season so far, with 8 in his last 8 games. Have a look on youtube for him. We tried to sign him in Jan, but they said he's not going anywhere til the summer. Us and Everton want him for around 5M. He would be our Lampard.

Agreed Jim,Benni as shown glimpses of his capabilities but it's still not enough for MH to stick him the sarting eleven?

Having the likes of JR can only be an asset & when he plays he contributes different quality's which hopefully results in a goal or assist but MH,I personally believe, would prefer to play the kind of football with BMc at the top of his game & in the starting eleven?

JR is most definately a good player & a asset to the team. Saturday was a good example of that.
Can he do it against the top clubs?
We all await the outcome?
Michael Bradley = An absolute must(ard)

well its got a BB postcode so its good enough for me.
this michael bradley guy if he was that good wouldnt all the major teams from europe be looking at him? especially if he's a snip at £5M.
i wasnt aware hughsie or anybody else associated with the rovers coming out and saying he was on thier wanted list.
just looked at evertons run in theyve still got pool arsenal chelsea villa to play plus derby brum and the mags so a couple of slip ups and who knows.
well youve gote to hope havnt you, last week all doom and gloom, this week all light and roses, oh the joy of being a supporter.

At west ham Roberts was by far our best player in my view, and to say he can't do it against decent sides? I doubt many other strikers have given John Terry the run around, in the way robbo did in last season's fa cup semi - final.

I agree with what Roberts says. Everytime he has been given a run in the side he has scored goals and caused problems. at the end of last season he scored something like 8 goals in 13 games for us. He must be kept in for the season, and then given a fair crack next season as well. It would be madness to sell him, and the partnership with Roque is looking dangerous.

Hi Woody, Ossy, Been busy with family round but Yeah someone impersonated History Man as well as Ossy - now how sad can you get!! But we can smell em a mile off (or should that be 10 miles off!)can't we?
Woody - Oswaldtwistle is actually bigger than Blackburn in land size and is in the borough of Hynburn (Now whoever thought up Hynburn as a name should be burnt at the steak!) Not sure that it means much but along with The Spinning Jenny and one of the Monkee's it's one of those things that stuck from school days about Ossy! 2-1 at Reading sounds a fair shout. Rather than keep the faith perhaps the Monkee's I'm a believer may be more appropriate for Ossy?

not me guys im a traditionalist, like henry the eigth you could say im a 'defender of the faith'.
good to see woody that youve got your optimism back. theres going to be a couple of to's and fro's over the next few weeks, points are going to be dropped and gained when least expected by all the teams around us lets hope we can match last seasons run in.

Jim Luftas - When has Benni showed glimpses of quality? In the last match against Fulham he didn't touch the ball. He should be sold, very skillful but totally ineffective. And a shocking attitude.

Daniel from Spain - Are u Bradley's agent, your obsessed with him!?

Roberts is a class player and he can start every game despite the competition with the rest of the strikers. He might not be a regular on the starting line up but I think he might get his place for the rest of the season if he carries on with his good form. Roberts and Santa Cruz make a great strike pair. If we see Roberts for the rest of the season we might see ourselves finishing in the top 6. It doesnt really matter who we play as long we win and try hard in the coming games.

A win always gives cause for optimism(until the next game!!)

The desire to win the game Saturday was superb. The sending off didn't stop the lads getting the job done.

Bentley said 'we played as a team & brought the real quality's out'.
Let's see that commitment & desire until the end of season.
Like you say Everton etc seem to having there 'sticky patch' which is excellent news for us...I wanna see us take advantage of that & the crowd can make a differance, which it did Saturday...

Now lets get it on for Saturdays game...HI-O-HI-O it's off to Reading we go..............

good, a gal with class cant beat it. i must admit im not a great JR fan, first touch none existant, but to give the guy credit he did well with santa on saturday and he worked his rocks off.
i know that benni gets a lot of stick for his attitude, but lets not forget JR wanted a move earlier in the season, also he didnt celebrate his goal with any conviction on saturday which weve seen a couple of times this season.
which tends to suggest first chance he gets he would be on his way.

Blimp Melted? - A bit like the Claruts defence then! Bad news to see Benetis wants Bentley. You have to admit he could improve Liverpool but Bents - do you want to be part of the great rotators part time playing squad? Be a star at Ewood instead. I'm I Believer.

anybody with a bit of flair would improve liverpool, theres bound to be interest in Bents, but of the 'big 4' you could only see him going to liverpool, (unless theres a massive clear out in the summer at chelsea) i couldnt see him going to the gunners or man u.
after that were else is there to go? possiblity is spurs (due to them definately being in the EUFA cup next season) but after that he would be no better off (in football terms) than were he is now.
re the 'blimp' is it true it was nicknamed ICARUS?
