FC UNITED have been dealt a blow on the eve of the new season with the news that star striker Stuart Rudd has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a broken wrist.

Rudd, who scored 45 goals in 49 games in United's title-winning campaign of last season, injured his wrist in an accident at home.

However, the club did receive some good news off the pitch after revealing they have sold 1,000 season tickets for next season.

As a result, the club are freezing ticket prices, meaning that the cost per game will remain at the equivalent of £6 for adults and just £1 for under-18s.

A club spokesman said: "This is a phenomenal achievement and we'd like to thank all our supporters for showing their commitment to the club.

"It was a magnificent response to what was an ambitious challenge, but as usual supporters have come through for their club.

"Season Tickets sales are up 33 per cent on this time last year and, with a month still to go before the start of the season, we hope that the figure rises even higher, which will help us to stick to our philosophy of providing affordable football."

Meanwhile, the Rebel Reds continued their pre-season programme with a 2-1 victory over Blackpool Mechanics on Saturday.

Jerome Wright opened the scoring for Karl Marginson's men, before Marc Beattie replied for the home side.

However, Rory Patterson ensured the victory when keeper Jamie Cook let a tame effort through his grasp and into the net.
