Seydou Bamber was the hero as Atherton Collieries secured their first victory in 10 games.

The Colls hit-man struck in first-half injury time to seal a 1-0 win against Division One rivals Nelson.

But despite dominating, it took a brilliant last minute save from goalkeeper Gavin Bates to prevent the Lancashire club from grabbing an equaliser.

Phil Brown's side had the upper hand for long spells and Andy Harvey hit the woodwork twice before Bamber bundled in Harvey's corner from close range on the stroke of half-time.

FC United kept the heat on leaders Salford City when they ran out 2-1 winners at Bacup Borough. But, the breakaway club had to come from behind to take the points after Andy Shepherd had given the home side the lead from the penalty spot on the half hour.

Rory Patterson levelled matters three minutes later and Stuart Rudd's 33rd goal of the season two minutes before the interval proved decisive.

Atherton LR managed only 18 minutes of their match with Newcastle Town before the fog descended. Daisy Hill's Division Two clash with Castleton Gabriels also succumbed to the weather.
