TOM Spencer made his Leigh Centurions debut in the team’s Northern Rail Cup defeat at Sheffield Eagles.

He became Leigh’s second dual contract signing for the season 72 hours before kick off.

The promising 21-year-old Wigan prop had made his Super League debut a week earlier in the 20-6 win over Leeds Rhinos at the DW Stadium and impressed in pre-season games against Huddersfield and Leigh.

He has joined Leigh at a time when resources at prop are stretched, following injury to Ricky Bibey.

The 21-year-old agreed terms on a Wigan deal in 2010 after playing for the Great Britain Community Lions Under 18s in a tour to South Africa, where he was teammates of prominent Leigh amateur players Mark Ballard (East) and Danny Jones (Miners).

Prior to turning professional Spencer emerged through the Wigan St Pats nursery.

The former Standish High School pupil had an outstanding junior career with St Pats, appearing in several cup finals and was a big success for the Warriors’ Valvoline Cup winning side last term when he made 22 appearances, including 15 starts, and scored six tries.
