David Alstead four tries for Leigh Centurions in cup defeat of amateurs Wath Brow Hornets

Leigh Centurions 52 Wath Brow Hornets 4

FOUR tries from Dave Alstead and a good display from Martyn Ridyard helped Centurions into round four of the Carnegie Challenge Cup as they made light work of Wath Brow Hornets.

After taking the lead after four minutes and producing a good holding period in the first half, National Conference League Hornets were no match for Leigh, who eventually registered 10 tries.

Hornets gave their all but whereas other professional sides struggled against amateur opposition, Leigh finished comfortably.

Brow started the game at great pace and when former Whitehaven prop Scott Teare sliced through from half-way he then found Peter Caddy. The winger looked covered with Nick Stanton moving in for the tackle but when the Centurions player slipped, Caddy got up to touch down and send the travelling support into raptures. Ryan Robb, a constant influence and go-to player for the Hornets missed the conversion.

Leigh struck back immediately when the influential Martyn Ridyard sent Tommy Goulden in for the first of two tries after seven minutes.

Ridyard and Robbie Paul then sparked a flowing move in the twelfth minute that also included Stuart Donlan and Steve Maden and led to Dave Alstead scoring at the corner.

A towering conversion from Mick Nanyn made it 12-4 before some spirited play from Wath Brow kept the scoreboard at a standstill for over twenty minutes.

Six minutes from half-time the game fizzled into life again when Stanton moved into dummy half and burst through two tackles before skipping past another and cleverly using the referee as a foil to swerve past fullback Ryan Amor. It was a glorious finish from sixty metres.

A fourth Leigh try soon came when Ridyard used a short blindside.

Steve Maden pushed through in support, swerving one man before popping the ball out for Alstead to claim his second after 38 minutes.

Although Nanyn missed the conversion, Leigh went to half-time with a 22-4 lead.

Centurions scored a further six tries in the second half and blasted out of the starting blocks when Chris Hill, David Armitstead and Ridyard combined to put Nanyn through for the first of his two tries.

Paul got in on the act to bring Hill a second try in two games with a lovely cut-out pass and more followed in the last quarter as the Hornets tired.

Ridyard and Maden went down the right to bring up Alstead's hat-trick after 62 minutes and when stand-off Ridyard grubber kicked to the in-goal area,it bounced up for Goulden to ground and continue his regular try scoring form.

Paul was rested midway through the second half With Tim Hartley partnering Ridyard at halfback and the two linked things well before MacGraff Leuluai drew the defence for Alstead to claim his fourth try ten minutes from time and there was just enough time for the tenth try near the end. Ridyard again created space for Maden to get Nanyn over for his second try before the big centre struck his sixth goal to complete a 52-4 win and a personal tally of twenty points.
