WINGMAN Matty Dawson described Leigh’s first competitive win over Wigan in 33 years as “unreal” and urged team mates to build on the long awaited success.

Dawson’s eighth try in six games helped secure a tremendous 50-34 Battle of the Borough success and lift Centurions off the foot of the Super League table.

Neil Jukes’ side now has a weekend off after its early Ladbrokes Challenge Cup exit against Hull KR but start a run of four successive away games at Widnes on June 22.

“It’s a tough one,” admitted the former Huddersfield and St Helens winger when asked if he would rather be playing again after such an encouraging result and performance.

“It’s been a tough period and it will allow us to get some bodies back.

“However, team wise and performance wise we would rather carry on where we left off.

“Hopefully, we can do that against Widnes.

“You can’t look too much in the past and you have got to concentrate on what is happening at the present.

“But you can always take a lot of confidence from results like the one we had against Wigan.

“It’s an unreal feeling because it meant a lot to the players to beat Wigan.

“To score 50 points against any team at this level is massive, especially Wigan.

“They are down on bodies but so are we.

“We just needed a performance and we got it for 65-70 minutes.

“In previous weeks, when teams have got back to us, we have rolled over and they have carried on ploughing through.

“So it was good to see everyone had a bit of back bone and we stayed at it.”

Head coach Jukes doesn’t have any doubt the free weekend is just what’s needed.

“While we want to be in the Challenge Cup this break has come at the perfect time,” he confirmed.

“This was our fifth game in 18 days and we were down to 18 bodies for the Wigan game.

“Our half back (Ryan Hampshire) played on the wing, our right back row (Cory Paterson) played centre and the only person who didn’t play who was fit was James Green.

“There are teams in Super League who say they are busted but there is no one more busted than us.

“Now, I am hoping to get four or five players back for Widnes and we can try and use this win to build as a platform for the last four or five games.”

Centurions’ prop Jamie Acton will miss next Thursday’s game at Widnes.

He pleaded not guilty to a Grade B tripping charge.

But he was he was found guilty, banned for one game and fined £300.

n St Helens’ utility back Matty Fleming, who missed the Wigan win due to an ankle injury, has signed a new one month’s loan deal to keep him at LSV.

“Matty has done exactly what we expected of him which is to come in and do a good job for us,” said Jukes.

Leigh are reportedly keen to sign Cronulla’s former Sydney Roosters’ Grand Final winner, Daniel Mortimer. The 27-year-old had been a target for Hull KR last year.

Lewis Foster, who plays in the halves or at hooker, has joined Rochdale until the end of the season.
