LEIGH Miners Rangers completed an historic treble as they stormed back from 14-points down at half time to edge Siddal 22-20 in a thrilling NCL Premier Division Grand Final.

It was fitting that one of the most successful seasons in the club’s history should culminate in this most gripping of finals as a tremendous second-half showing earned Miners their third piece of silverware of 2015, following their League Leaders' Shield and Conference Cup triumphs.

They were led superbly by scrum-half Scott O’Brien, who picked up his third man-of-the-match award in Miners’ last four showpiece finals.

Brad Hargreaves also added two more to his tally as the Premier Division's top try scorer, helping Miners stun a Siddal side that seemingly had one hand on the trophy when they took a 20-6 lead into the interval.

Siddal beat Miners at Twist Lane to secure their place in the final and named an unchanged squad.

Miners were without regular kicker Jonny Youds, who was working overseas, and Mick O’Boyle, who suffered a dislocated shoulder in the play-off win against Rochdale Mayfield.

But Connor Ratcliffe returned at loose-forward and Adam Thomason came in to bolster the bench.

George Ambler crashed over beside the posts and Gavin Stead kicked the goal to open the scoring for Siddal.

Miners responded positively though and they were swiftly back on terms, Tommy Parkinson running the angle to perfection as he burst on to the ball 25 metres out and blasted through three attempted tackles en route to the line, O’Brien adding the conversion.

The league winners had Siddal on the ropes after that but could not find a second score and their opponents took advantage.

The Halifax club regained the lead on 20 minutes when Shaun Garrod looped a pass out wide and Gareth Blackburn was in at the wing to score.

Siddal added another 10 points in a 10-minute spell before the break.

Iain Davies started it off, running on to Sean McCormack's pass to go over via the post protector.

Stead added a penalty before an inspired offload by Davies put ambler in to go to ground.

Miners were even more up against when Matt Astley was sin-binned for tripping Garrod as he broke through and Stead added the resulting penalty to close out the half.

A man light and 14 points adrift, the Leigh side needed the first score of the second half and that duly arrived as Jimmy Muir put Hargreaves cutting in for his first try of the afternoon.

O’Brien showed that the kicking practice with Miners old boy Martyn Ridyard – now with Leigh Centurions – had not been in vain as he landed a fine touchline effort.

Despite still boasting a healthy lead, Siddal began to lose their discipline.

And Miners cranked up the pressure as Muir and Hargreaves again combined just after the hour, the stand-off putting the big centre sliding in for his second try, while O’Brien added another conversion.

With two points separating the teams and the rain teeming down, Miners pressed for the winner, which almost arrived as Ellis Grimes scrambled a kick in-field on the last but Thomason could not gather the ball cleanly as the chance went begging.

Ratcliffe, Dowie and O’Brien all broke the line but Siddal just about hung on.

Yet with the clock ticking down, O’Brien kicked over the line and Dowie nipped in to gather before passing right for Grimes to dive in at the corner flag, sealing the win in the final act of a most memorable campaign.
