The County Championship Division One match between Somerset and Lancashire at Taunton was abandoned without a ball bowled on the final day because of heavy overnight rain.

The downpour continued during the morning, leaving much of the ground under water, and umpires Neil Bainton and Martin Saggers decided shortly after 10am here was no prospect of play.

Somerset were due to resume their first innings on 87-3 in reply to 400 and took six points from the game, while Lancashire collected nine.

Surrey's clash with Durham was also abandoned without a ball being bowled after another overnight deluge left the Oval awash.

Umpires Martin Bodenham and Mark Benson called the game off well ahead of Sunday's planned 11am start time in order to allow Durham's squad to head off towards Birmingham for their next game against Warwickshire starting on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Worcestershire are set to go on flood watch after the abandonment of their match with Nottinghamshire at rain-battered New Road.

Although the Environment Agency has not issued immediate alerts for Worcester, the weekend rain is certain to top up the local rivers.

Club officials anticipate at least a 48-hour wait before the Severn - which flows directly past New Road - reaches its peak level.

The Severn has flooded New Road to devastating affect before, most recently in 2007.
