KEVIN Davies scored his first league goal of the season as Wanderers defeated Wigan at home for the first time in the Premiership.

Paul Scharner's own goal gave the Reebok men the perfect start, but Steve Bruce's Wigan quickly pulled themselves level through Denny Landzaat on 14 minutes.

Nicolas Anelka then missed from the spot after Andreas Granqvist handballed Danny Guthrie's powerful shot from the edge of the box.

Kevin Nolan scored eight minutes before the break - his second goal of the season - and from there, Wanderers never looked likely to lose their lead.

The second half proved just as enjoyable as the first, with El-Hadji Diouf's header cleared off the line by Emmerson Boyce and Jussi Jaaskelainen making an outstanding save from Marcus Bent's point-blank header.

Davies gave Gary Megson's men some breathing room on 70 minutes when he diverted Diouf's curling free-kick into the net from six yards out.

It was his first Premiership goal of the season - his other strike coming in the famous 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich last month.

And at the death, Anelka atoned for his earlier error by slotting home Davies' cross from close range for the fourth.
