UPDATED: Kean resigns as Blackburn Rovers boss

Rovers boss Steve Kean has quit Rovers boss Steve Kean has quit

Steve Kean's troubled reign as Blackburn manager came to an end tonight as he resigned from his role, saying in a statement that he had been "forced" out and that his position had become "untenable".

The Scot has been a much-derided figure at Ewood Park for the duration of his near two-year spell in charge, with the low point being relegation from the Barclays Premier League in May.

But despite poor results on the pitch, Kean retained the backing of the club's owners, Venky's - much to the fury of supporters who regularly protested against him.

The tide seemed to have turned for the 44-year-old this season, on the pitch at least, as Blackburn made a positive start to the campaign, with Rovers sitting third in the npower Championship table ahead of tomorrow's trip to Charlton.

Fan unrest has continued, though, and tonight, in a statement issued through his lawyers, Kean said: "For reasons that I cannot discuss on legal advice, it is with deep regret, given my hard work and service for the club for a number of years, that I have been forced to resign as manager of Blackburn Rovers Football Club with immediate effect, due to my position as team manager becoming untenable.

"I wish to thank all the players and coaching staff for their great support and the majority of the fans, who now see their club heading towards an automatic promotion position back to the Premiership. I wish the club all the very best for the future."

There was no sign of Kean's decision to step down on the club's official website, with the lead story one of him talking of a "positive week".

When contacted by Press Association Sport, managing director Derek Shaw said: "I have been travelling down to London and this is the first I have heard of it."

Kean was appointed as Rovers boss in December 2010, replacing Sam Allardyce who was relieved of his duties despite saving the club from relegation in his first season in charge.

Kean's contract was upgraded a month later and, although he Kept them up that campaign, it was clear he was not a terrace favourite.

As Rovers struggled at the start of the 2011-12 season, the calls for Kean to stand down became stronger, but despite that, he was again given an improved deal in the November.

Regular protests reached their most vicious when Blackburn lost a six-point relegation battle at home to Bolton but Venky's remained nerveless, though, standing by their man despite a seemingly inevitable relegation being confirmed when they lost at home to Wigan in May.

Even the most loyal Blackburn fans expected Kean might be relieved of his duties over the summer, but the faith remained in the boardroom, despite disparaging public comments from director of football Shebby Singh, who had to apologise for stating Kean would be sacked if he lost three games in a row.

Kean was heavily backed in the transfer market, signing Huddersfield's Jordan Rhodes for £8million, but despite only losing their first league game of the season last Friday, he remained under heavy pressure.

Singh did little to douse the fires this week when he said the situation was getting worse "day by day", with those comments coming three days before Kean's decision to stand down.

OK, you lot. Having spent two years writing 'Kean Out' it's about time you acted in a positive manner - and started to sing about who you want in. Be nice to give someone a warm welcome., eh! Imagine turning up for your first day at work and not feeling wanted. Imagine arriving after days / weeks of fans singing your name. If you want some fan power, now is the time to show it. Demand who you WANT. Be positive. And don't let the type of 'fans' who wished the club down to the old third division the last time around grind you down. Funny, I was just reading Chris Sutton's book in a shop today and in there is an observation that the best goalscorer at the club was SuperAtko. I remember when scores of fans had a real downer on him prior to (and sometimes during) the glory days. At least he's got a Premiership medal to his name now, so good on him for sticking through the abuse. And, in all fairness, good look to Steve Kean after he finally did the honourable thing. Clearly getting Kean out was the result the vast majority of us fans wanted and I am pleased as the other posters so far tonight. But the fact that he had to resign, and that the Venky's were not strong enough to fire him is sticking in my craw! They had a chance to demonstrate to the fans that they do listen to us and really care what we think. With him resigning, they still have it all to do to prove to me that they are up to the job of running our football club.
He should never have been able to come out of this with any morale high ground and I'm sure tomorrow the media will be all out in sympathy for him.

The other thing that is tempering my delight of Kean's departure is the thought of who they will appoint next! Surely they will not make the same mistake and appoint a coach(Eric Black or Colin Hendry) to take over on a permanent basis?! If they do then we are back at square one.
Personally I would go for Mick McCarthy, for his honesty of calling a spade a spade if nothing else.Something we have been aching for for too long!

Hi Wildrover - A great night to be a Rovers fan and hopefully we can all start pulling together from now on - I'll certainly be at Forest on Wed night and then Wolves a few days later.

I think you are being a little unfair on me about critisising Hendry-Black - in another post on here I also say that who ever Rovers fans appoint then ALL Rovers fans should fully get behind that manager.

However, that said, now that SK has gone, it would be the opportune moment to clear out the SK/JA "jobs for the boys", hangers-on and let the new manager appoint his own people.

Also, why don't you finally congratulate us "boycotters" for getting rid of this odious cretin

- no-one can deny us our "VICTORY" - we have heard all week that Venkys are concerned about falling attendances/revenues
, SS has said it on numerous occasions recently and finally our unified stance has paid off, so come on Wild Rover and all our other fellow Rovers fans who renewed their ST - give a little acknowledgment and credit to the 8,000 "boycotters" for getting us this result today.

I certainly will be raising more than 1 glass tonight to the other, dedicated, unselfish 7,999 "davids" who have fainally salin our "golaith" - well done those people !!!!

Also, why don't you finally congratulate us "boycotters" for getting rid of this odious cretin - no-one can deny us our "VICTORY" - we have heard all week that Venkys are concerned about falling attendances/revenues , SS has said it on numerous occasions recently and finally our unified stance has paid off, so come on Wild Rover and all our other fellow Rovers fans who renewed their ST - give a little acknowledgment and credit to the 8,000 "boycotters" for getting us this result today. I certainly will be raising more than 1 glass tonight to the other, dedicated, unselfish 7,999 "davids" who have fainally salin our "golaith" - well done those people !!!!
8000 boycotters? That means that season ticket sales will increase by 8000 by the time we play Wolves and attendances will be at least 21500 for the rest of the home games this season, we'll see ;-!

Hold on you say LP, you gotta return now whoever is in charge, you have whinged for years about Kean. My guess is thousands won't return just find something else to moan about, hope i'm wrong and see 20k plus gates again!
Hi Givet

Yes I will return in fact I would love to return but I will put my business head on and should the Venkys go for a cheap "Yes" man and we go through all this again then no I won't and who would blame me.

I love my club and Kean was a major problem but NOT the only problem, the Venkys need to bring in a manager and let HIM manage.

This is a time to celebrate though we have got rid of one problem lets hope the owners have learnt from appointing a yes man and get some one in. Who knows what he is doing.

I'd still like to see the back of Venkys long term but Kean going will do for now. I'll be back for the Wolves match and beyond. Might even try and get to the Forest match if I can. It's the best news for the club in 2 years.
If you want to see the back of Venkys then someone better get their wallet out. Can't see any of you doing it in fairness. Or anyone else for that matter. How about people support the team or **** off. Bloody wasters.
Be realistic John Williams struggled for years to find a buyer for rovers. Venkys have delivered this year.Get behind the club.
Venkys have delivered TODAY not this year, or last year or the one before that; and even then he's walked. Mind you, it does sound like something dramatic happened this afternoon / early evening.

How did it suddenly become "untenable" when talks had been "positive" this morning? Maybe someone just pinched him and he finally woke up.

Tomorrow is, as they say, another day. We'll see where we are when they make their next move.

Latest odds - Tim Sherwood is favourite, don't know about that.

Mind you, I'd have had Tim f@cking Henman this time yesterday

It was the Walker's Trust that was trying to sell the club by the way not JW.

Great news. Steve Kean is to be offered a job in the board room as Director for Global Football Development.

I'm glad to hear this news. Steve Kean did brilliantly getting the club as far as he did and it would be a crying shame not to build on the foundations he laid.

He deserves this position. Well done Steve.

Good news that Kean has gone just 18 months too late. Won't celebrate until we know whose taking over. Unfortunately after another transfer window of debateable signings the " strongest squad ever"" he has left us with is short on defenders and midfielders with pace which could be a problem for the next manager. Will be p.....d off if the media accuse the fans of a witch hunt against Kean as I can't think of a manager with a worse record who has survived. When Sunderland got rid of Bruce who had a better record than Kean they were congratulated for appoointing O'Niell. At least we don,t have to boycott the Wolves match and I hope the missing 8000 turn out to support the team.

"Calm down, calm down" - lets not get too excited. Kean's gone, thank God. I saw him walking alone on the front at Lytham last Friday morning (c11.30 a.m.) before the Middlesbrough game. He didn't have his Bodyguard with him and he was on the mobile (probably SK was going to Colin's for a lift). Anyway he was not speaking to anyone on the phone, just listening - perhaps it was Mrs. D picking the team or he could have been ordering a taxi to Ewood. Now he has a taxi out of Ewood, but why was Shaw not aware of it? As for Agnew, is our PR / Director of Communications still alive, haven't heard from him since Shebby came in. Realistically, the shambolic the way the club is being run is still apparent to everyone outside the Ewood Boardroom. Let's look at what the owners do now; will they appoint a proper Manager or will they promote Hendry? As for Venky's, they were in shock when we were relegated and were taking time to consider things. Are they in shock now? (smelling salts for Mrs. D and tissues and a world cruise for Kean's wife). Be careful what you wish for, Spartans and Boycotters. "Keep calm and carry on" - I await developments before the Wolves game (if any).

We had better get the man you want or you'll all be off again. Who is it your after, Guardiola, Mourinho, Fergie? Anyway you can rejoice and sleep easy tonight and so can I as I'm sure most of you wont return to Ewood until we're back in the champions league.
Don't be ridiculous. Unfortunately people like you are 'fellow supporters' and have contributed the the downfall of our once great club. I will not return until Venkys prove to me that they are 'in it for the right reasons'.

The odour of a very large rodent is lingering around my nostrils. It will all come out in the wash eventually and when it does you will get a rude awakening.

Expect Kean to take a board room position and the new manager to do as Kean says! I hope that I am wrong.

Perhaps the LET should put together a survey on who Rovers fans want as manager before they will come back and present it to Venkys to get the choice implemented

Message to Venkys- This time do not appoint the cone man and kit man as first team manager. Do not appoint a young ex pro player who is a coach and has never managed. Hopefully this whole disaster has taught you that you need an experienced manager in charge. Someone who has actually managed a team at Championship level or above. Just thought I would make that point, to ensure we do not get another disaster like Kean.

God almighty, how can people still be bickering on a day like today? This is the best day our wonderful club has seen in two of the longest; most depressing years on record, I had to pinch myself first thing. Sure venkys could feck up again but they badly want a piece of that 3.2 billion tv money, so my bet is that they won't. can we all not just enjoy that lovely, expectant, new manager feeling? The best thIng for me is that now venkys know that the beating heart of Blackburn rovers is us lot. I will be peed off however, if there aren't 20,000 rovers fans inside ewood next week.

At least come to this match to show the media that we are true football fans not glory hunters. Show the Venky's what they can expect if they do things right! If they muck it up again by appointing a nobody then that is the time to stay away. Let's have a great party next Saturday.

There are some dilluded idiots commenting after the resignation of Kean. Do you think any manager with any self respect is going to join you while the Vekys' are in charge. Rednapp? You must be having a laugh! You will get another inexperienced manager in Tim Sherwood (and good luck to him) coz no other experienced manager will go near you! Get rid if the Venk's and then you can start celebrating!

Have a look at your own Club muppet. A struggling manager and now rumbles of 'he has to go', 'not good enough' A board that can't afford a loan signing. Come January Austin will leave and your directors will smooth out the cash. So not everything is so rosey in your own backyard. Inspite of all our Club's faults and having our worst Manager, we still sit higher than Burnley in the League! Doesn't say alot for you lot, does it?
The Dingles that come on here need to get over your Rovers obssessions, have a look over your shoulder, while you've been distracted with the goings on at Rovers, your own Club is slowly starting to unravel.

Why did he go now? The start to the season has not been bad. He has coped with the aggressive obcenities, so they didn't make him go. What did for him, were the commercial realities, the massive drop in attendances, the lack of sponsors. In the end, if the customers don't buy the product, the guy responsible has to go. The questions now: do the present board have the capacity to attract and appoint a candidate willing and capable of doing the job? Will the absent thousands return?
I don't know the answers. The wages of this summer's signings need financing. Let's hope that there is still a club in 5 years time.

Leaving a note that he

He goes downstairs
To the kitchen
Clutching his Press Release

Quietly turning the back door key
Out of Ewood he is free

KEAN......

HOME......

Kean's leaving home after living a lie
For so many years
Bye.....Bye

Shebby snores as his wife
gets into her dressing gown
Picks up the letter
That's lying there
Standing alone at the
Top of the stairs

She breaks down
and cries to her husband
"Shebby our baby's gone!"

Why would he treat us so thoughtlessly?
How could he do this to me?
