My Rovers move nearly didn’t happen, says Premier League winning skipper Sherwood
8:24am Monday 10th September 2012 in Sport
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
AS he lifted the Premier League trophy in front of a packed Anfield crowd, Tim Sherwood’s place in Blackburn Rovers folklore was guaranteed forever.
After joining Rovers from Norwich City in February 1992, the all-action midfielder enjoyed three-and-a-half seasons of almost continual success at Ewood Park as the club enjoyed a meteoric rise up the footballing ladder.
It could all have been very different for Sherwood though as he reflects on his own ‘Sliding Doors’ moment that could have changed the direction of his career for good.
He said: “When I was at Norwich, I went to Derby to speak to Arthur Cox and had pretty much agreed to join them.
“I was on the train going back and I got a call from Kenny Dalglish, saying about possibly going to Blackburn.
“I then got a call from Arthur Cox saying, ‘I hear you have had the big man Kenny Dalglish on the phone’.
“I said, ‘Yes’. He said, ‘If you are my son, I’m telling you where to go and you go to Blackburn’.
“Whether he had changed his mind about me or was genuinely pointing me in the right dir-ection, I don’t know.
“It turned out we beat Derby in the play-offs that season to help us get in to the Premier League.
“It was like sliding doors for me, it could have gone either way.”
Sherwood’s switch to East Lancashire was far from an immediate success as, battling through a hernia injury, he only played a bit part in Rovers’ Premier League promotion campaign.
He was not even involved in the play-off matches, as Derby and Leicester were defeated, but took his opportunity to shine as skipper once the club were in the top flight.
Sherwood said: “The dream was to get into the Premier League. Everyone knew Jack was throwing a bit of money around, it is all relative now, but the ambition was to reach for the stars.
“We never really looked back.
“Once we got in there we went from fourth, to second to first.
“It was quite quick. In the first year you thought, ‘Can we really win it?’.
“The second year we really were title contenders. Going into the year we won we actually believed we were going to win.
“Kenny was a big pull for me, of course he was. Obviously there was the transition in the club as well. They had built a new stadium, we trained at Pleasington, where we had to stop training when a funeral procession went through.
“It was not about the facilities, it was about who was in the place. We were all pulling in one direction.
“There was no commercial outlook from the football club, it was totally about winning football matches. That is how we would all love football to be now but unfortunately it can’t be.”
Rovers are still accused of buying the Premier League under Jack Walker, with Kenny Dalglish given the funds to add the likes of Alan Shearer, Tim Flowers, Chris Sutton and Graeme Le Saux to the squad.
Sherwood, who is now on Spurs’ coaching staff, is adamant that was not the case though.

They all cleared off when Jack stopped footing the entire bill and the likes of Tim thought "I'v been here before it's those revolving doors again" I'm off too.

Perhaps talk to some of the key figures in the last promotion push in the Souness era - Jansen, Friedel etc...even to hear from players or staff from the Mark Hughes era might be worthwhile, if only to remind ourselves that Rovers did know how to get it right, play good football and make good decisions at some point during the 21st century.

That was 1990s and clubs traded in millions.
Luckily BRFC were at the forefront of the buying frenzy and we did it.
Thanks to Uncle jack....!!!
Lets take note here that after the death of Uncle jack, the walker family knew they could not compete no more as all the other billionaires on earth took notice of what money could buy and the rest is history before you
and Lets not forget also that the walker family did not want to plough their inheritance into the club as Uncle jack had done.
BRFC were so fortunate that we had a benefactor in Uncle Jack and we bought the success BRFC deserved.
Unfortunately, that cant ever happen again because we dont have any local BRFC fans who are billionaires and football clubs need Billionaires.
Yes million aires cant compete no more.
so come on you fans we are actually really lucky that the Venkeys bought this club, lets not forget no one, I repeat no one wanted to buy the club.
BRFC was put to the sword by its owners, The family of Jack Walker.
they are the ones who sold the club.
We didnt find no worthy owners.
we didnt find no British owners.
we didnt find no European or American owners.
All we got were some foreign owners who knew nothing about football.
Actually, BRFC are very lucky we found someone willing to buy BRFC.
The real issue with BRFC that comes to light is the issue of fans.
the real BRFC fans...where are they.....!!!!
just because most clubs in football have foreign owners does it mean we stop being genuine football fans of BRFC.
Or should we stop being supporters because weve got Indian owners..?
The question should be raised why didnt you mortgage your homes and buy the club.....!!!...you could have done that...!!
anyway fans should get on with supporting the club.
BRFC really does need genuine BRFC supporters.
so get out of your caves and start doing what youre supposed to be doing

So if I sold you a second-hand car and it broke down 18 months later, that would be my fault would it?
The recent past debacle is no-one else's responsibility other than the current owners total ignorance, ill-advised mis-judgement and abysmal mis-management.
Sadly, football is a business that owners can ill afford to mess-up. Having read the latest BRFC Fans Forum meeting minutes, the lies, deceit and false promises are all continuing unabated...

The majority of the players we bought were unwanted or ones with unproven potential. Shearer and Sutton were great players but not established 20 goal a season strikers and le saux was an unwanted left winger converted to the countrys best left back.
We certainly didn't go around cherry picking already proven prem players like Chelsea and city, I think the only two established England internationals we bought were batty and flowers.
Besides, having money to spend doesnt guarantee success, look at the money Roy lehane spent at Sunderland, didn't do them much good did it.

It's been really good spending the summer watching the olympics and paralympics and seeing amazing, wonderful, genuine champions perform superhuman, amazing feats, in front of adoring, passionate crowds. This is sport at its best.
It's really f*****g sobering, demoralizing and heart-wretchingly sickening seeing the "former footballer" (check his wikipedia, folks) reptilian chancer Steve Kean, with only four professional games to his name, play football manager 2009 (PC Version) at Blackburn Rovers, a club which consists entirely (with the exception of Myles Anderson), of elite athletes - something that Steve Kean has never been.
Doesn't make sense.

The selfish **** couldnt even stay with us until the end of the season to try to keep us up, he sulked and walked out on us in Jan when he should have shown loyalty and tried to keep us up. Infact, it was the least he could do for us after we made him as a player and all of the success we had with him.
Its just a shame that Captain Sherwood couldn't wait to go to his beloved Tottenham and l left us in the lurch in the january window when we were struggling. We were relegated, when he could have helped save us and left with his head held high. No ledgend to me

His legacy is heavily tainted by how he abandoned us when we most needed him, leading to our relegation.
