Rhodes completes Rovers move
6:01pm Thursday 30th August 2012 in Sport
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
JORDAN Rhodes has become Blackburn Rovers ’ joint record transfer after completing his switch from Huddersfield Town for £8million.
The former Huddersfield hot-shot has moved to Ewood for the highest transfer fee paid by a club in England outside the Premier League, in a bold statement of intent from owners Venky’s.
The 22-year-old has signed a five-year deal and is understood to have been handed a bumper personal package to lure him to Rovers’ Championship challenge.
His £8m capture matches the sum paid by Rovers to Manchester for Andy Cole and dwarfs other business done by their Championship rivals this summer.
Meanwhile Portuguese defender Nuno Henrique is expected to put pen to paper tomorrow ahead of the 11pm close of the transfer deadline, with Polish international goalkeeper Grzegorz Sandomierski also set to complete his move - a season-long loan switch from Genk.
Rovers don’t expect to make any more additions before the close of the window and are hoping to keep hold of their squad, despite interest in some of their stars.
It is understood Kean has watched Senegalese winger Modou Sougou, who plays for CFR Cluj, but a move is unlikely to be completed in this window.
Southampton are understood to have expressed an interest in Swedish left back Martin Olsson, but Rovers are determined to keep hold of him.
Steven Nzonzi could depart tomorrow, with several Premier League clubs showing an interest in signing the Frenchman on loan.
David Goodwillie is another who could depart before tomorrow's deadline, with Bristol City understood to be looking to sign him on loan.
Rhodes was the top scorer in England last season, with 36 league goals, and spearheaded Huddersfield’s promotion charge to the Championship.
Rovers boss Steve Kean, said: “Jordan is a top class striker and we are absolutely delighted to bring him in. His record is there for all to see and I believe he can play a major role in our drive for promotion back to the Premier League.”
Rovers’ managing director Derek Shaw, who played a role in the record-breaking transfer, said: “An awful lot of work has gone into this deal and we are all indebted to Mrs Desai and her family for their magnificent support. “From the very first day I walked in here, the owners have given superb backing for everything we are trying to do on and off the field. That is where the credit is really due.”
Rhodes registered a phenomenal 40 goals in all competitions last season, which included three hat-tricks, all four goals in a 4-4 draw with Sheffield Wednesday and five in a 6-0 whitewash over Wycombe Wanderers. He helped Huddersfield secure promotion via the play-offs and was rewarded with the League One Player of the Year award.
The prolific marksman has continued his fine form into the current campaign, netting three goals in three games for club and country this season, including his first international strike in Scotland's 3-1 friendly win over Australia earlier this month.
He had been called up to the senior squad having netted eight goals in eight games for Scotland’s Under-21s and will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s trip to Leeds United.
For all the reaction to Rhodes' move see tomorrow's Lancashire Telegraph.

So this is a good thing. Having the worst Manager a dodgy defence, and saying we need to break the transfer record with another striker.
Oh well someone had better celebrate, before the Leeds game, because there'll be nothing to celebrate after it, they can play football.

never felt inclined to comment before as was very unhappy with the destruction i had witnessed of my club.
this signing though has definitely brought my optimism back and at least demonstrates ambition by brfc.
the whole Kean situation has kinda worn me down and am just focusing on the team now.
lets hope our good form( luck) keeps going

Only a few days go comments on saying we were never going to sign Rhodes , now hes a fool to come and Kean will ruin him , yes we should have done this last season but better late than never , yes im one of the 8000 , and yes we are lucky to be 3rd with the performances but lets be positive . To be honest most on here will find something to moan about , yes im not big on The Venkys but this is a great signing , and Kean wouldnt be my choice as manager but im there to cheer my team on , hopefully some will come back and cheer them on but if not, thats there choice .

I can have no criticism of people who attend the matches, nor people who have had enough of the whole Kean debate. Nevertheless I am another who can only see massive improvements in attendance, performances and morale if he does the right thing and leaves the manager's position. He may have to be pushed, stubborn as he is. That's my two cents and I'm sticking to it.

Real statement of intent and puts the pressure bang on Kean. You have to admit if it was another championship team who signed Rhodes, Best, Murphy, Etuhu and Gomes you'd consider them promotion favourites. For the first time since his appointment I think his job is on the line if the team don't perform.

What do you suppose they would have done if 26000 of us had continued to pay at the gate? Very little I suspect. Why would they bother? It's all about money for them.

I will NOT be buying a season ticket while Kean is still there though. I expect he'll completely mess it up, say Rhodes needs time to settle in, say it will all work out and we'll start winning when the team gels and plays more games together etc etc. But I now think we might just escape relegation no matter who is in charge. I don't buy it that we have great quality of players, they have all got to prove it week after week. There are lots of hard times ahead, but the clouds are moving. Yay!!

Great signing and a real statement by venkys trying to build bridges. The naysayers on the other hand prefer to whine about Keanochio who will probably get his bacon saved thus ensuring the premier league glory hunters only return if we are promoted. Works for me

Us 'stay aways' will certainly be returning as and when we see fit - now you my dear boy are probably not one of the 'hard core' 5,000 hard core supporters from throughout the 80's unlike my good self - yes, there are still many of us left ... so we know full well what it's like to congregate in our hundreds and thousands outside the Nuttall Street, chanting 'sack the board' and for the end of the honorable Bobby Saxton (check your history, there was life before Jack Walker - R.I.P. and the Premiership) ... back then the likes of Bill Fox - R.I.P. would come out and front the fans, and tell us we are being listened to, but we don't really have a button to rub between our fingers, etc - an honorable Lancastrian with integrity who told it like it is/was!
Many lessons can be learned from this era, yes, things have moved on from that time - however Blackburn folk remain the same - we want as much transparency that is possible in matters regarding our club, and we certainly don't like being lied to - please note Venkys and Keanocchio!
I'm glad your proud that you're backing the team - but hey, we fans are bleeding too, sometimes you have to make a stand in this life and sadly not enough of that happens nowadays, actions speak louder than words, more actions Venkys and Keanocchio and less words (although he'll never learn this!) and we shall return to back out club and get behind the players, but mark my words ... trust is a must and that works two ways!
I still want Martin Olsson and N'Zonzi to stay and then I'll be happy that we've just about got enough class options to go for it ... I still fear with a little over 24 hours to go though ... one swallow doesn't make a summer, the fact that we've had a crap summer - weather wise - well that's something we can't even blame Venkys or Keanocchio for - lol!
The 2300 tomorrow will be defining! Yours itching to back OUR club once more! THE END - lol

Also dontbthink Venkys did this to bring the fans back. Even before the boycott the gate revenue was 6 million a year, now with half the gate the income will be about 3 million, so even if all the fans return that will bring in a maximum of another 3 million. So do you honestly think they will spend 8 million on a player to bring 3 million in income? Remember, even that 3 million is not guaranteed as not all the fans will come back with this one signing.
So get back in there and enjoy the football. :)

For any club to survive with their level of investment they have to be in the Premiership, this signing is about business and money, Venkys have to get us back in the Premiership to take advantage of the huge money on offer in the Premiership. Losing a few quid because of a few hundred boycotters means absolutely nothing in terms of modern football finance.
Seems like venkys are learning about the reality of football finance.

we've just signed one of the best players in the league, who will bag 20+ goals given our midfield perform at half their capacity. id go as far as saying he could make a good prem striker if he continues to perform, heard a few clubs enquired about him who are far better teams than us. well worth the investment at 22.
Sorry to be so blunt but, sick of the same people whining and moaning on here, and it is literally every time i read this comments page on each rovers story the same sad, miserable people. Instead of reminding us all that your not coming why dont you just keep it to yourselves because its getting rather boring, ill be there at leeds on saturday cheering on my team, end of, i hope you can all join me and help us win, which is what we will be doing, the stigma attached to having a 12th man at home and away is true in any sport with the fans getting behind their team and if we do im pretty sure we'll be well near the top of the league come the end of the season. We've signed JR for a down payment of £3m, Nicky Maynard is going from WHU to Cardiff for £3m reportedly. Who would you prefer? No brainer really, though not seen too much of JR.
Business wise, doesn't seem too bad, although wages are massive, but the spin-offs are good.
However, I do get the impression of a power-struggle ongoing at Ewood, a certain inconsistency around the players we bring in. Murphy, Best, JR, CKR appear reasonable for this League, the Portugeezers on the other hand appear to contradict those signings, untried and untested in a very very competitive league.
I'm not trying to start the conspiracy theories again but, summat ain't right! Who is making the decisions? Whoever owns Rovers has woken up to the £60m payout that the EPL offers, and that action needs to be taken.
Whatever, good signing it appears. Let's just lose the Clown please Shebby.
I want to come back and support my team but will not do so until SK goes. Simple!
I'm at Wigan on Saturday, my son is at Anfield on Sunday WTF! The whole family is watching Rochdale the week following.
We could be spending this at Ewood. Sack the Clown. Sack him now!

Those fans saying that the boycotters and demonstrators have brought this signing about are completely deluded. They are not even a distraction to the Venkys.
Seems like venkys are learning about the reality of football finance.
.
I also think they've realised what they have lost through relegation and are making an effort to get back to the riches that is the Premier League.

NZonzi always promised to step-up and become a good player (the next Viera as Sam might have said) but he almost always missed his way somehow. It might have been a lack of confidence with him or being ordered by the odious one to play in a way that restricted him, but whatever it was I wish the lad well wherever he moves to.

Well done Venkys; well done Shebby and come on you Blues!
Do you honestly believe that Rhodes will perform at his best with the tactics and selections of Kean? Don't be stupid. You have to agree he will get few opportunities to score and very poor service. You will probably jump up and down with joy when he scores and say "I told you so" but it will be Rhodes' own skill alone and nothing at all to do with Kean and his coaching or management.
OK, I agree that Rhodes is a hot prospect and Venkys and Shabby need congratulating. But isn't it so out of character? It's the only positive thing they've ever done! Perhaps Best wasn't bad, except he's another Grella for injuries, Murphy is well past it, Etuhu is average to good, etc etc. Rhodes is the only signing of note. Phil Jones, Chris Samba, Ryan Nelsen, Junior Hoilett, Niko Kalinic, etc etc were good players that have gone. Their replacements are nowhere near as good. Only Rhodes is better than what we had and the first signing who is an improvement on we had. WHY?
Desperate times, performances have been dire, even Venky's can see we're doomed under Kean but as he is a part owner of the club, they can't sack him, so they've taken desperate measure. It's a gamble, Rhodes can't play, but he can score. Perhaps he'll learn to play as well and then be worth a lot. But if he scores that will be enough for Rovers. They are not going to make many chances under Kean so if Rhodes can still pop his half chances in, he can save Rovers from complete humiliation.
It will he great watching the highlights on TV - there will be the occasional one now that Rhodes is here. But there'll be not much else and it will be far too poor to pay money to go and see. There you go, my latest prediction - it's going to be boring apart from the occasional Rhodes highlight.

All the humble pie being eaten by the part-time 'fans' who said things like "it's just a smokescreen to con us fans"; "he'll never come to Rovers"; "we'll end up with Luke Mooore or another loan signing"; "when he meets the manager he will run a mile" etc etc Wow, I bet you feel really, really silly right now. Best get t' Turd and watch a team that deserves you. For better or worse Rovers have signed the hottest prospect outside of the Premier League and I, for one, congratulate the owners for finally doing something right. If ever there was a reason to get behind the team this is it. All the other Championship fans are as jealous as hell at what our owners are prepared to do to ensure promotion and at the pressure the Club is applying to the manager to succeed. It is time to get behind the team and roar them on to success. If Kean is still around at the end of the season so be it and who cares as long as we are back in the Prem? Well done Venkys; well done Shebby and come on you Blues!
Well done Venkys; well done Shebby; well done Stevie, you have proved comprehensively a lot of football supporters are actually quite shallow and easily pleased.
One swallow does not a Summer make.
Seems a good signing though, I'll give you that, Luso, but you can't honestly say you too are not a little surprised.
Venkys may well be realising this football malarky is more expensive than they thought and they need to be eating their chicken at the top table to prevent them losing a whole lot more money.
They seem to have decided to speculate a little to achieve it, to invest rather than try and do it on the cheap by cutting too many corners.- good for them; no, honestly, good for them.
The last published accounts showed the wage bill to basically be about the same as the TV money which is now a third of what it was. Next year it will be half that. Has the wage bill come down by those amounts? We have signed some high earners, some with little or no resale value so it's unlikely, despite all the players they shunted out last year.
Their biggest liability remains in place of course and it will be interesting to see how long they will continue to take this attitude if we don't go up this year. The parachute money drops but they will still have the same wage bill,
Here's hoping they stick with their new policy as long as they cover the losses. That will also be interesting to see.
When I say interesting, I mean worrying.

Not going to criticise those who chose to fund a continuation of Kean's reign who can't face not going. Each to his own. Can't help thinking that Pederson will now play a more important role as Rhodes is a clinical finisher and competent in the air. (Hadn't realised he's 6' 2")
The Pensioner's dead ball delivery will be very important. Rhodes can score with his head. It now seems that we should get some movement up front - something Murphy was exasperated by against Leicester. He was poor in this game, but boy oh boy did his team mates make it harder for him.
Check out You Tube to see Rhodes in action. I am impressed with what I see. Just hope he can live up to the £8m price tag and deliver.
As for service - get CKZ back on the right flank and start stretching the opposition.

Well, he did go public with the club's interest, in an underhanded attempt to de-rail Singh's personal project, but clearly it didn't work.

moan moan moan moan moan!!!
undercover dingles love moaning but come december the second when were in the top two and weve sh@ on the bastards below, all the moaners who dont have jobs and are on here well past midnight who post all the negative drivel which gets us NOWHERE! i hope you've all disappeared into thin air and hopefully gone back to burnley, why dont some of you sad c*ts go and get a hobby so we can worry about rovers for you instead, cause your moaning is not helping us one little bit.
we've just signed one of the best players in the league, who will bag 20+ goals given our midfield perform at half their capacity. id go as far as saying he could make a good prem striker if he continues to perform, heard a few clubs enquired about him who are far better teams than us. well worth the investment at 22.
Sorry to be so blunt but, sick of the same people whining and moaning on here, and it is literally every time i read this comments page on each rovers story the same sad, miserable people. If you dont like it that much stay at home with all the so called 'fans', I dont care how long you were a rovers fan or if your grandad wiped ronnie claytons arse when he was a boy, if your not gonna get behind us then your not a true SUPPORTER, maybe some people need to be reminded of the definition of the word.
Forget about kean and venkys, they are clueless, but we have a good team and if we get behind them we can win games and achieve promotion and end up back where we belong.
Rovers till i die!

Leaves Kean on a knife edge against Bristol city defeat there and he goes
But does he? What's to say he justs steps down , but stays as an advisor, and still basically runs the show from a different angle, but yes he is proberbly the worst thing to happen to rovers in the last 30 years
And as fans arguing with each other about true support PATHETIC, go and support the dingles
Support is seeing rovers playing at 64 different grounds being a season ticket holder in the not so good late seventies and eighties ttravelling to Colchester for a Friday night game or just 20 fans going to Swindon on the old ribblesdale coaches, or going to Plymouth, we don't have the right to be in the premiership, just because of what Jack Walker did for us in the 90's, a lot of fans think its a god given right that we belong in the premier league,

Anyhow the dingles are very quiet on this one, they're usually busy sticking their noses into stuff that's got nowt to do with them.
£8million is a figure you lot can only dream about. It'd buy all your players, your tinpot ground, the club, and half of that 5hit-hole town its situated in!
Class that he bagged one against the inbreds , then signed for us a few days later, virtually guarantees hero status from day one!

There is to much infighting on here,we are ALL Rovers supporters. We all want the same thing,Premier League football. It wont matter to Venky's ifyou go to watch or you stay away, Kean will be judged on results. Promotion is a must this season and Kean will have to deliver. I believe his tenure will start after the transfer window closes when as Shebby says, he will have the tools(players) to get promotion,if he looks like he is failing he will be out. With Keans record of team selection and tactics, that wont be long. Venky's are demanding promotion this season, and everybody has to deliver. Shebby will have to stand by his words and he will have to deliver just as Kean will have to do the same. Unlike last season this is now about results. Nobody is bigger than the club. Support the team, Allow Kean the good grace to fail by his own decisions,as he surely will. No amount of infighting between fans will make that happen. Going to the match or staying away wont make any difference, its about results. Just my opinion. Before anyone wishes to refer to me as a glory hunter,I have been going to Rovers since 1960,through the good and the bad years. Kean will be removed, make no mistake,Venky's will not waste money.
So why is he still here?

Oh well someone had better celebrate, before the Leeds game, because there'll be nothing to celebrate after it, they can play football.
