Blackburn Rovers left with no sponsors as WEC deal ends
9:25am Wednesday 29th August 2012 in Sport
By Bill Jacobs, Local government reporter
METAL fabrication firm WEC’s sponsorship of a stand at Ewood Park has ended leaving Blackburn Rovers without a commercial sponsor.
The company and the football club confirmed that the rolling one-year deal had finished as the name boards came down from the Darwen End of the ground.
Rovers bosses said they were in talks with a number of possible sponsors for both the shirt and stand.
Blackburn MP and Rovers fan Jack Straw said he was hopeful that the team’s successful start to their first season in the Championship after relegation from the Premier League might bring them some high-profile sponsorship.
WEC director Wayne Wild, chief executive of the Blackburn Rovers Supporters Investment Trust which is seeking to buy a stake in the club, said: “It was a one-year rolling agreement. That agreement has now come to an end.”
The failure of the Darwen firm and club to agree a new deal after four years comes after the end of a one year free sponsorship of the Rovers shirts by The Prince’s Trust.
Rovers operations director Paul Agnew said: “WEC and the club have been unable to agree a further one-year deal for the Darwen End. We currently have no stand sponsorship or sponsors for the shirts after the agreement to allow the Prince’s Trust to be on them for a one-year period.
“We are currently in talks with a number of potential shirt and stand sponsors but have yet to reach any agreements.
“That does not mean we will not do so in the near future.
“We need to maintain the value of the brand particularly regarding shirt sponsorship.”
Mr Straw said: “I think it is unfortunate that Rovers have no sponsorship at the moment.
“Obviously it would be good if the club got new financial support for Rovers, but it is their first year back in the Championship.”
Glen Mullan, chairman of the BRFC Action Group, said: “I am disappointed that WEC has ended its sponsorship of the club at a time when supporters are staying away.
“The club needs sponsors to come forward to get revenue at a time when fans are not buying tickets.”

Even I gasped in amazement when I saw the Ewood Park attendance v/s HULL CITY, 13,562 spectators for Rovers opening home game of the season. I will say that again 13,562- the lowest attendance at Ewood Park for a league fixture for almost 20 years, since August 1993.
I had predicted on this website that if Rovers persisted in employing Steve Kean, their gates in the championship will plummet to around the 12,000 mark. But even I did not expect it to happen so soon. To compound matters the Saturday attendance v/s Leicester was no better.
Reports from within Ewood say that Balaji and Ventakatesh Rao making a rare visit ‘THEIR CLUB’ were shocked at the lack of fans v Hull City. WELL WHAT DID THEY EXPECT?
You can only ignore football fans for so long; you can only treat them with contempt for so long. You can only go against all their wishes for so long.
Eventually they will come Back BITE YOU. And bite the Rao family they have.
Whilst Mrs Anurandha ( I like to be entertained ) Desai insists on keeping Kean in employ the fans have said enough is enough and half of Rovers regular support have left the club, never to return whilst Kean is manager. No matter what results Kean now achieves, and I am not holding my breath on that outcome being fruitful despite a promising start to the season.
Since the Venky group took control in November 2010, they have now halved the support to the club that Rovers had under the Allardyce and Williams regime. Rovers were enjoying average gates of just under 26,000. And at the start of Allardyce’s last season in charge 2010 – 2011 sold in the region of 18,000 season tickets. Followed by the sale of 14,000 season tickets the following season with Kean in charge, which as predicted by all and sundry led to relegation.
In a patronising interview on Sky TV on the afternoon of the Hull game, operation director Paul Agnew appeared to tell the world that season ticket sales are not as bad as been reported and corporate sponsorship is still good. He went on to say “mistakes last season have been recognised and acknowledged”
This interview preceded the Hull City game last Wednesday. Agnew must have been squirming in his seat as the fans failed to show.
Next day following the damaging attendance and the fury of Ventkatesh and Balaji Rao, a statement leaked from Ewood said that season ticket sales are around 7,000.
NO they are not, my sources tell me they are way under that. And as for the patronising out of touch Agnew interview that “mistakes have been acknowledged” when was that? I have not heard of any acknowledgement to mistakes made or apologies offered by the Rovers hierarchy.
I certainly have not heard Kean acknowledge any mistakes or offer any apologies for being relegated and certainly no statements of regret from the Rao family.
Ventkatesh Rao did however appear on Sky TV in a supposed ‘exclusive’ back in late May, all that amounted to was a pathetic, tearful interview in which he said “ we are not bad people and we wil get things right”. SORRY Ventkatesh, you are bad people, very bad people, you have ruined my football club and as for getting ‘things right’ PIGS MIGHT FLY.
Back to Mr Paul (Kean has me in his back pocket) Agnew. Do not insult our intelligence by waffling on about how rosy things are, they are not. You haven’t even got a shirts sponsor for Christ’s sake. What have you been doing all summer?
The whole future of the club is in doubt. Financially, once the parachute payments have run out, you are about to crumble.
Without fans you have no club. The whole club is in trouble.
Did you not for a moment foresee what was going to happen?
It’s ok Mr Agnew being dismissive of Shebby Shingh’s remarks re-the manager.
Singh has a valid point only he did not express it very well. And the point that Singh was probably trying to make is that whilst Kean is still at the club, they will be no coming back together of the club and the fans. NO matter what the results are good or bad. NO matter what players are signed. NO matter what statements of reassurance you make. NO matter what the Rao family do or say.
The problem at Blackburn Rovers is obvious to all and simple to solve. Steve (£1.3 million per annum) Kean has to go. Then and only then can you Mr Agnew even think of rebuilding the club and renewing a bond and relationship with the fans. Does nobody at Ewood realise just how disliked Kean is. For ‘pity’s sake’ wake up before it is too late.
Reg.

If you treat your 'customers' as Venkys do, you can have no complaits when they walk away.
Can anyone be in anyway surprised at this when WW was trying to converse with them he was treated like something they had trod in, and thats the problem.
You can go and be treated likewise, or stay away and save yourself the insult.

Along with the empty seats and lack of sponsors on the shirts (aren't we allowed two in the Championship) its pretty obvious that Kean and maybe even Venky's have to go, or the club will lose more and more money.

Who in their right mind would want to associate their name with the idiotic Owners/Manager at Ewood Park - can fully understand WEC not wanting to renew their sponsorship throwing more good money at the wasters without any possibility of a return on their investment especially also with their stance in respect of the current Ownership of the Club.
So no Sponsors, no 'real' investment in structure/players just lots of freebies (with no doubt some underhand activity) with no experience of the Premiership let alone the Championship!!!
Kean s big mouth on the loose with quotes of strength in depth and can fight on a number of fronts this season - yet fall at the first hurdle last night with a woeful display!!!
And as for Mullen not sure who he is supporting anymore other than becoming a spokesman for the Venkys - was he really the instigator of the protest marches against the Manager/Owners?

What i don't get is this invasion of Portuguese players who are third rate. The always mention Sporting Lisbon, Braga etc but the truth is with the exception of Nuno Gomes the others hardly played for these clubs, but instead 2nd division teams or loaned out. If they were quality players then 1. They would be playing 1st team football for the top sides and 2. They wouldn't want to come to Blackburn. Maybe Steve Kean is making comission on all these players. I know the Portuguese economy is in trouble but not as much as Blackburn Rovers.

Bit much of Mr Mullan to expect the sponsors to keep putting their money into Rovers when a lot of their fans aren't doing the same, smacks a little of double standards - maybe the sponsors do not want to invest for the same reason as the supporters, i.e. lack of trust in Venky's, just a thought

Sounds like the squad is just as happy as the fans then - Quality finisher and no doubt in my mind he can deliver 20+ goals in the championship. Instead he is just likely to get a fine....
For goodness sake, play a 4-4-2 please Kean.

I could sympathise with Kean if he came out at the end of the 10/11 season and admitted he was out of his depth but he continues with this aura that he is untouchable. Even in the past I sympathised with Kidd and in some respect Ince because I trusted them as a person. However, despite trying I can't trust Kean no matter how hard i have tried.
I think its pretty clear that there is a hidden agenda at Ewood. No matter how cluless Rao & Desai are about football they are not clueless about business & in my opinion there is a defining reason why Mr Kean is still associated with Rovers.
Despite our reasonable start to the season I am extremely worried about the future of my club. We have been extremley lucky to get 7 points so far but I firmly expect us to get found out on Saturday against Leeds (who I add are being run by an exceptional manager). I do not expect promotion this year & I am firmly confident that even reaching the play offs will not be acheived.
I just wish in this country the relevant associations/authori
ties would step in for 'non premier league' clubs when they are faced with predicaments like this. This would surely stop cases like Leeds (a few years ago) & Portsmouth.
It breaks my heart BRFC

The longer they are here, the more damage they will do. The longer they are here, our slide to oblivion will continue unabated. DI CANIO for BRFC
I can't go to that many matches due to various reasons but went last night with the previous match I attended being home to Norwich at the end of last season.
Last night was probably the biggest show of sh*te I have seen Rovers put on for many many years. A big worry would have to be the apparent enormous drop in quality even from a more or less relegated side v Norwich compared to last night. Surely we should have strengthened over the summer. We have blatantly become a fair bit worse. It doesn't take rocket science to work out why we've had a big influx of Portuguese. It's got nothing to do with untapped market because all clubs across Europe are and have been aware of this potential and those that are any good have been signed. Though Fabio Nunes looked to have potential but the other two were appauling. If we wanted young potential what's wrong with the lads who got to the FA Youth Cup final last season?
Still no real investment and more transfer fees being pocketed the latest going to be Bunn £1M, Polish keeper lot less?
Had every intention of going to Leeds but I'm b*ggered if I'm paying £53 for me and the lad to watch that cr*p.

THE AMAZING DECLINE OF BLACKBURN ROVERS F.C.
Reg.
Footnote:
If I had an employee in my business that had lost me half my customer bases in 18 months, guess what I would do? Like any business man, I would have to let him go, simple as that. Why is Kean still at Ewood? The mystery deepens.

Admittedly a decent manager might get more out of the players but, let’s not forget who brought in the majority of them!
The facts as I see it are simple.
The problem is that on paper we have a decent side. Now someone (Andy Cryer!?) needs to ask some serious questions find out why they are continuing to play woefully under-par in every game? We want straight answers, no bulls*** please.
It's happened in over 95% of matches since Kean has took over. Despite his pathetic record as a manager people should not forget that on actual performances it could be even worse. In matches where we have been dominated, and there are a hell of a lot of those, we have scraped the odd win or draw from the clutches of defeat somehow. The opening championship matches are evidence of his biggest streak of luck yet.
I fear that with Venky's as owners this will probably never get much better, but to dismiss Kean now and appoint a non-yes man would give a better manager the chance to stabilize the mess created and get some of the fans back to the matches.

Just Clearing up my comment, as It's Been misquoted , I was asked what I thought about wec not sponsoring. I said that it's disappointing that the club will allow sponsors and supporters walk away , rather than understand the reasons why both are doing so. I know wec are very disappointed that the partnership has not continued . It's not for me to explain what happened , but how this has come about stinks . The community and supporters are being put last and there is no logical reason for this. The fact the club would gamble a serious loss of revenue is very worrying , and to date nothing the club has said either publically or behind closed doors gives any optimism that our clubs future is not bring gambled

A new guy would assess the situation and probably be asked to judge the manager on merit this season so obviously he would need at least 2 more matches before he could justifiably sack Kean.

Owners who don't have a clue what they are doing.
A manager who is reviled by all true Rovers fans whether they are still going to Ewood or not.
Fans who rain hatred and bile from the stands.
Sponsors part with their money to gain advertising, to get their company and products out into the wider world, they want a positive return for their money.
Even Venky's aren't stupid enough to sponsor Rovers.
There is absolutely nothing positive about Blackburn Rovers at present and that will not even begin to change until Steve Kean is removed as manager.
Even then far too much damage has been done to our once great club.

Spot on post Reg...the problem is, there's NO-ONE at the club with the dinity, gravitas, skill, contacts or experience to negotiate wit any meaningful sponsor.
The solutions to our problems are simple.
1. Get rid of all the loonies running the asylum...Kean, Agnew, the PNE guy, Singh.
2. Bring back John Williams with unfettered control.
3. Get a proper sponsor
4. Appoint Di Canio as manager and give him control of football.
The team should be
Robbo
Lowe/Ribiero
Dann
Givet/ Hanley
Marcus Olsson/Givet
Murphy
Nzonzi
Martin Olsson
Formica
Kazim Richards
Gomes/Rochina
with a fluid 4-3-3 system
Would any of the 20,000 loyal Rovers fans disagree with that?

These have been the outstanding questions for some time now and the likely "wheeling & dealing" going on within the club is also in question.
I suggested we would end up with bargain buys (sell one get one free, re Bunn) PLUS there is no way the Venky,s are going to spend 5-10 million on a proven striker....PLUS with conman Kean on-board we are only going to be able to sign 30 plus pro,s desperately looking for a season or two contract....or last minutes "Morrison" 7.00 special,s....!!!!!! (made in Portugal, it seems...)
WHY do the Venky,s and conman Kean continue to say things they NEVER intend delivering to the club.
