Kean targets a challenge on all fronts

STEVE Kean believes Blackburn Rovers have the strength in depth to challenge on more than one front this season – as he hands his squad players the chance to shine.

The Rovers boss has suggested the likes of Danny Murphy, Dickson Etuhu and Nuno Gomes will be rested for this evening’s Capital One Cup second round tie at MK Dons, but insists he has the players to progress in the competition.

He said: “It is a time where we have to be careful with the lads who have played most of the three games. They have played lots and lots of minutes and maybe we will have to rest them.

“What we have shown is, if we have to change it around, we have lots of quality. We have quality sitting on the bench and we will utilise the whole squad and I believe we have enough to get through to the next round.

“Danny Murphy has played a lot of minutes, so we could take the opportunity to rest him. We have to utilise the squad. There are a lot of players who have played three games in a week and they have to rest.

“You look at the bench though and you see players who played in the league above in the Premier League and haven’t featured yet. We have players we can put out and win a game.”

With players like Ruben Rochina, Simon Vukcevic, Paulo Jorge, Fabio Nunes and Mauro Formica pushing for a start this evening, Kean believes Rovers’ squad is looking strong.

He said: “There won't be too many better centre back partnerships in the league. I would doubt there would be any better than Danny Murphy and Dickson Etuhu in centre midfield.

“When we look through the rest of the squad we can rotate players around with experience and quality. The young ones we have brought in have got such ability.

“We have got a great squad. We have been good in front of goal and I think there is more to come. I think we can create more chances.

“We have been working a lot defensively, trying to minimise the waves of attack we get at us. We need to improve on last year’s goals we conceded and we are looking good. We are looking solid and we are looking clinical.”

Yes, we have lads on the bench who played in the Premier League last year. There's a reason why they won't be playing there this year. Players of their quality, which you seem keen to reiterate in every interview, should be able to walk this league, even without a manager. So it's funny that, although we're seven from nine, you've still managed to make such hard work of it.

It's a strong squad for the Championship because it's got plenty of relegated Premier League players. If we had this squad in the top flight we'd be one of the favourites for relegation. Also, had we managed tostay up I doubt very much we would've signed Murphy, Etuhu, Gomes, or Best. Venky's have thrown money at the problem too late and should we fail to get promoted this season we'll be in serious financial trouble unless they dip into their own substantial pockets.

If there's just 2 teams with better defences then that's the automatic promotion spots out of the window.

three matches in 7 days is enough and Kean is correct to rest the mentioned players in fact Murphy should be dropped after a very poor display on Saturday. It just seems to me whatever Kean does he is wrong in most commenters eyes but then again none of these negative people will ever have managed a football league club before maybe billys under 10s which makes them an authority in football management.
Kean is here to stay until and unless results go against us which is when he will be replaced. Get over it and move on...moaning on a newspaper website will get you nowhere.
7 points from 9 despite playing poorly is a good start. Personally i aint bothered if we go out of this cup this year it can get in the way of our priority..promotion. Leeds on Saturday is the priority and getti g at least a point.

“local football team” seriously what’s local about BRFC now, apart from an overweight ex-decent/one England cap wonder/midfield player taking 20+k a week out the kitty for sitting on his backside?........now
’t local anymore …mercenaries the lot of them, from the owners who know bug ger all about football or the area their business resides, just business people after a quick profit. The management just after taking a big pay check every week. The players now being signed because of the agent they use rather than their footballing ability……….BRF
C has now severed all links with the local community. I truly feel sorry for the fans that go to Ewood in the hope of better days around the corner, wake up, these charlatans are ripping the life and soul out of the club and don’t care about the divide they’ve created amongst the fans. I will not badmouth anyone who goes to Ewood, after all it’s your money and you’re entitled to do with it as you wish, but so am I, can honestly say I sleep at night knowing I’m not supplementing a regime whose only goal is profit, at the expense of a fantastic local club, that club we all luv with its special place in our hearts is NOT ANYMORE…it’s a sham.

I am embarrassed too it makes you wonder if peoples motives are really deep down anti Kean/Venkeys or are they just Premiership glory fans as when I started going the gates were only 8000 or so and increased substantially when Jack decided to invest but the hard core of true fans is less than Burnley's who have always had more real fans than us,

Come on you Blues, get another win tonight and it's a big one against Leeds this weekend. I feel quite positive to be honest, I don't like kean, he isnt the right manager for us as we clearly know but I am enjoying the championship, it's refreshing to be fair and a chance to be one of the top teams in the division. Let's face it the Prem has all the glory, tv rights etc but it could be a great season for us, I agree with Wrigglers 100%. One thing though, I can relate to the stay away fans but it was never an option for me or my lad and it's down to choice but the only way to get fans back into Ewood is to win games together with decent football and this is where I feel Kean will not be given time, which he shouldnt be given. Our current squad has got to be one of the best in the Championship, it would have to be a cr@p manager to not be able to get promotion with those players.......food for thought eh?

That is going to be a tough game, so a healthy 3-0 win tonight will be excellent .

Its not about the premiership , I have followed the club home and away in every division they have played in. I will be doing it again when Kean has gone, regardless of which division they are in.
I would have renewed also had Kean been sacked as it would at least be an indication Venkys knew he was a big **** up. Im suffering ill health at present so its making not going to Ewood more tolerable. Iv been going for nearly 40 yrs. My friend has been going for 69 yrs since he was 5 and couldnt stand any more and didnt renew which says it all to all of us. All this rubbish about premier league supporters is rubbish
Still can't understand why so many were prepared to support a team managed by Kean last season, but aren't prepared to do the same this season.

Hi Fellow blues,
.
Morst can take no more of this so I ahve asked for my account to be deleted and closed - he is distraught beyound belief at the events of the last 2 years seeing a record 20,000 ST's turn into a Civil War and 8,000 ST's by people with no morals or love for the club. So its goodbye from him and ........
.
In the words of Greenday - wake me up when Steve Kean has gone!
.
Thanks for all the debates on here its been fun so ...Don't Look Back in Anger - I heard Uncle Jack say...

If everyone did the same and BOYCOTTED EWOOD we would EMBARASS the current owners into making a change. It is OBVIOUS.

Ask John Williams et al what they think of what has happened/is happening to BRFC.

Venkys Blue And White Army.
Yes your right if everyone boycotted the club it would cause a huge embarrassment it would also cause administration and possible liquidation so go on you keep telling yourself that a boycott will force the current owners into a change.

Nobody made any rules, 10,000 fans have made up their own minds individually.

I can only give you my reasons:

I bought my ST last season after a lot of hard thinking, I have a very demanding job and going to Ewood is one of my releases and pleasure's in life. I have been going since I was 11yrs old and held a ST for 25 years with one of the best seats in Ewood.

In the end I renewed last year in the belief that the owners would do the right thing when Kean messed up . For the first time ever I wasn't enjoying the experience, it didnt feel like my Blackburn Rovers that I had followed with a passion for all these years.

The owners have dismissed and shown no respect to the fans, the protests passed with no reaction. So sadly this was my first chance to do my own protest and obviously thousands have felt the same way.

The events of the last 18 moths are well documented and in my opinion Keans role in it all is unforgiveable.

So there we go my friend, sorry to go on a bit but I needed you and others on here to know that the non attenders are not interested in which division we are in, there are more important things than that.

I respect those that have chosen to attend, but I will not stand back and allow the 10,000 to be slagged off on these pages.

You cant cant criticise the boo boy brigade, they are the true fans of BRFC and would be more than happy to see them go into administration and slate the people who go to matches. To be honest if you look at the last time rovers were relegated the attendence was down to 16k for the first home game this time it was 13k. That to me says that these fans are using the keane situation as an excuse to become citeh fans. Lets hopes they stay away with there negativity

the club we knew and supported is dead - killed by a bunch of incompetents - and thats being kind.

how can we support something that no longer exists.

to support anything that has mr kean as a figurehead is an insult to everything that jack walker stood for,

it condones the selfish actions of a group of individuals who have and continue to demonstrate a complete lack of interest in the views of what were a loyal group of supporters

i have stated before that the most significant action we can take in addition to refusing to attend games is to ask the walker family to demand that jack walkers statue is moved out of the ground

Wigan game 26000 including biggest home crowd of the season.
Hull game,i make it 97 days later, 13000+.
At what point during that 97 days did not going to Ewood become the right thing to do?
Nothing has changed, nobody wanted Kean last season,so why did everyone keep going?
Who made the RULE that NOW is the time to stop going?

But the reason i replied to you in the first place, the other night, was becaue you were criticising those who renewed.
I,too,respect any decision others make.
Had to laugh at Morst's outburst though. He spent all last season saying his heart rules his head, and saying that he couldn't face staying away.
Now he's chucking it all in because people who are still going have no morals. You couldn't make it up.

All we want is some integrity and truth. I don't hate Kean but I find his presence as manager absolutely insufferable.

He's like a disease spreading to all corners of the clubs foundations and it's seeped into the performances which are now becoming consistently poor at an alarming rate.

I find his handling of the players to be well below the standard expected of a so called 'excellent coach'. And his tactics are non-existent, I honestly believe he does no scouting on opposing teams and just waffles a load of crap to the players. I know others won't agree but that's how I feel.

You are beginning to sound like Kean. Beaten 2-1 by a lower league team is bad enough, being beaten by a team from lower league that had to field a scratch side is unforgivable. Anybody who had any doubts about Kean being the right guy for the job must now admit defeat. He will go down as the worst manger in the English football game, never mind just at Rovers. He is beyond all rhyme or reason. Kean and Venky's epitomize all that is wrong with foreign owners and the beautiful game. Hear no football, see no football, know no football. Brass monkeys.

Whilst I agree that going out isn't a complete disaster, I do believe a decent cup run would've done the fringe players' morale the world of good. However, I think a lot of the anger directed at Kean after this result is due to his comments before the game rather than the exit itself. It's almost as if the man jinxes the team every time he makes a bold statement.

I think we've got decent enough players to get promoted, although the depth of our squad is nowhere near as great as Kean says it is. A couple of injuries or suspensions in defence or midfield will cripple us. Also, Kean needs to put professional differences behind him and use the players in order of their ability. Starting Edinho in front of Goodwillie is a prime example of 'cutting off your nose to spite your face'.

As far as I'm concerned, Kean has shot himself in the foot again with his latest declaration, although this time it's because there's an element of truth to it. Yes, we do have lots of quality on the bench so we should've won this game comfortably. The fact that we didn't only emphasises Kean's managerial shortcomings even more.

Unfortunately for us, Mrs Desai can always be relied upon to bandage that foot.

you make some very good points srvp......especially about the odious one. Why oh why can Venkys not see that he is the main cause of trouble at the club, that he is the main focus of all the unrest at Ewood on and off the field?

The football world in general cannot believe that he kept his job at the end of last season and surely if they can understood that then they would question this themselves and would get rid of him pronto. The brothers Grimm seem to want him gone now....but how long before her upstairs agrees? One more second is too long for me.

The results are coming though (despite Kean - and not because of him) and we are third in the table and clear favorites to win the championship......I just hope the Venky matriarch can see past the good start and take a more long term view and also consider the past 18 months. That was a complete disaster ending in relegation and she must know that she cannot - must not - wait for another disaster to befall this season due to Keans ineptitude again.

Keep winning yes, but without Kean.

He has had a reasonable start - MK dons have seen right through his wobbly back 4 and it won't be long before the thumpings start when some of the championship sides get into their stride. Next 10 to 15 games will tell us where we are going this season.

This was a disaster waiting to happen. Did anyone really believe and think that this competition would be taken seriously ?

The FA Cup will be exactly the same. These competitions are seen as a chance in giving the 'fringe' players a chance - huh fat chance then !

Don't let me here of the odious one as being held up as a beacon of ambition, positiveness etc etc. he his the most negative of people I have ever witnessed considering that which he his lauded for !

In itself losing is not the end of the world, but after last seasons forfeit gaff yesterday's article was read by myself as an admittance that this was not a priority and I expected nothing.

The odious one is the most slippery of snakes I have ever witnessed. His remit is to get BRFC back into the promised land, and not for footballing reasons(IMO)........
.........

Does the odious one really believe that he his going to do any better with his third attempt at the Premiership ? Bolloxx - although I'm no oracle it is so chuffing obvious. Yo-yoing in and out of the premiership does have it's financial benefit's - does it not ?

Many Championship teams along with Premier teams lost to lower league teams evening last, and every respect to them for taking the competition seriously along with giving the bigger so called clubs a bloody nose. I'm sure other supporters are debating their exit, but ours, of course becomes more bloated through the abysmal record of the odious one along with the circus that follows him.

This regime just does not give a good chuff over BRFC's history and it's supporters, and will be built in their vision no matter at what cost, and I'm talking human cost here !

I want to go back to Ewood and just as I see a glimmer of hope it is shattered, but I won't give up on our club unlike this imposter who purports to manage it !

I question the wisdom of these people, and I am here to be proven wrong, unfortunately, it would seem that it is going to take a lifetime !!!

I'm absolutely convinced now that this is the future before us and the odious one is going nowhere alas.

Rover and Out......and though it is scant consolation for the fans that traveled - Bolton, Ipswich, Leicester, Crystal Palace, Birmingham, Hull, Watford, all got knocked out by lower league opposition.

And don't forget that in the last round Blackpool got knocked out by Morcambe and Cardiff and Brighton went out also to lower league opposition .....

those results put a slightly different slant on our result tonight and show that it is very obvious that the Championship is either
a) Rubbish
or more likely
b) a division that clubs are willing to sacrifice the league cup for. to stand a better chance of getting to the holy grail - the prem.

Still need to keep the league unbeaten run going at Leeds...
you must be DIZZY with all that SPIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i know Benal1 its not easy....but seriously you have to look at these things objectively and last nights result (although it was rubbish and made another mockery of SK's latest spoutings) was not in any way 'unique' to the Rovers - and it is not such a big deal or a drama. Though the fans that went wont think that and quite rightly. All our efforts should be on getting out of this league and getting a result at Leeds. One game at a time.

The mighty Jubilee tower on those desolate moors that looked down on most of my youthful days in Darwen.... I know it well RR - my Dad used to say that if you can't see the Tower then it is raining, and if you can see the Tower then it is about to rain!

No the package has not arrived yet.....the snail mail from England can take eight days worst case to reach here, probably goes via Belgium or somewhere! I will let you know the moment it arrives...

Perhaps Morst realised it was time to retreat when a picture of Sam Allardyce brought tears to his eyes. But Morst will be back, too much of a Rover.
