FULL TIME: Blackburn Rovers 2 Norwich City 0
3:47pm Saturday 21st April 2012 in Sport
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
BLACKBURN Rovers gave themselves a Premier League lifeline this afternoon with a 2-0 win over Norwich City.
Junior Hoilett's brilliant second half strike added to Mauro Formica's first half goal to move Rovers ahead of Bolton and just three points behind Wigan.
Norwich City started brightly and should have been ahead on nine minutes when Jon Howson's pull back from the bye line caused panic in Rovers' penalty area.
The ball eventually dropped to James Vaughan just eight yards from goal but, left completely unmarked, he missed his kick as Rovers scrambled the ball to safety.
Rovers were appealing for a penalty kick just minutes later after Norwich defender Russell Martin appeared to flick Morten Gamst Pedersen's free kick away with his fingers, but referee Kevin Friend awarded a goal kick.
Rovers started to gain some control of the game and almost went ahead on 22 minutes after some Junior Hoilett trickery.
The Canadian found space down the right flank and his whipped cross was fumbled by goalkeeper John Ruddy but, with Pedersen waiting to pounce, Elliott Ward hacked clear.
At the other end Paul Robinson reacted well to push Jon Howson's fierce 25-yard shot over the bar on the half hour mark.
Yakubu was inches away from getting on the end of Pedersen's chipped cross , while Grant Holt headed just wide for the visitors on 36.
Rovers were agonisingly close to the opener on 38 as Yakubu's mis-hit over head kick from close range bobbled against the post, after Pedersen had headed Hoilett's deep cross back across goal.
They didn't have long to wait to break the deadlock though as Mauro Formica volleyed home from close range on 41.
After Yakubu raced down the left channel, his lay back was brilliantly crossed in from Pedersen to pick out the unmarked Formica just yards out and he made no mistake.
Rovers enjoyed the perfect start to the second half thanks to a moment of individual brilliance from Hoilett.
The winger cut inside from the left flank and bent the ball past Ruddy from 25 yards to double Rovers' lead.
Norwich then dominated possession but, able to sit back on what they had, Rovers were able to keep them at bay.
Half way through the half 'We want Venky's out reverberated from all home sections of Ewood Park Aaron Wilbraham had a shot saved by Robinson with 20 minutes left but Rovers held on to three crucial points.

By the time Rovers come to play Wigan on Monday 7 May, I can see either (a) the bottom 5 staying exactly as it is or (b) Wigan and Wolves where they are now with Bolton having picked up a couple of points and moving out of botton three with QPR dropping back in and Rovers still there.
The game again Wigan is massive and they have same GD with only a three point gap. That could be the game that decides our future.
Can't see us getting owt against Spurts and Chelski.
However, with Chelski still in Champions League, who knows?
Personally, If Rovers win again Wigan - it's down to the last day of the season and GD.

In addition I see at least one heavy defeat (by at least three goals) against Spurs/Chelsea which will send us down on goal difference if it comes to that.
Our only hope is by beating Wigan, and hoping that QPR/Bolton both capitulate. I can see QPR going down, as Stoke at home is their only remaining fixture that they should win. As for Bolton they have a couple of dodgy fixtures e.g. Sunderland, Villa and Stoke away, but I still expect them to reach at least 35 points with some hard fought draws against teams with nothing to play for. That home game against West Brom will probably keep them up.
I just cannot see us finishing above both QPR and Bolton, and I feel that Wigan will be safe regardless. We have missed our chance with woeful defeats to Liverpool, Swansea, Bolton and West Brom, where 4 points from those would probably have done the job. A great shame but that is what happens when you produce such a run of pathetic performances whilst the likes of Wigan and QPR show fight and determination.
Only a surprise result(s) from the away games will give us a chance.

Result was needed but its too late. That team were very capable of beating Bolton, Swansea. Wigan are safe. They only need to beat Wolves. With Bolton's games in hand you would think they would pick up enough points but QPR under the better manager, are doing well in the games which were supposed to be the hardest. I reckon the season will finish with Bolton joining us and Wolves. I actually think its a waste of a place having Wigan in the PL. Their support is so poor. Can never fill one stand and the away support always seems like the home support. Its a rugby town and the ground is always full for rugby
Wigan won't get another point this season...but our three points against them probably will not be enough without a point from the games at Spurs or Chelsea..

Kean proved me wrong on today's result as I believed we wouldn't gain another point ! I guess at this stage and what is precariously positioned how we achieve the points is what matters.
I'm not getting excited or too despondent I will just have to see what develops ?
The one difference I will put forth however, is that Norwich are safe and they played as such. On the other hand our last 3 games are V teams who have it all to play for and they will most certainly be a different proposition. Of course, hope springs eternal and all things are possible in football.
The crux game for myself will be the last game should everything still be there to be played for ?
Wigan V Wolves !
Chelsea V BRFC
My backside is coming out on the Town Hall steps should that be any other than 2 home wins !
All the same well done the boys today and hats off to Givet for a sterling performance.
I will not give 'yon mon' to much credit. Forget that.
QPR winning at the moment. Another nail in the coffin ?
Ah well, enjoy your week-end fella's and lassie's.
1 win in six........

Weve had a great time in the premier league. Won it, won the league cup, had european football, cup runs, memorable footballers playing for Rovers. In all, a much better and longer time that Burnley have ever had so little wonder they feel so bitter and twisted. Any taunting is pretty useless with the run weve had.

However, all the players came over and applauded the Darwen end so the VENKYS OUT KEAN OUT chants must have really disorientated them.
Stop reiteraring Kentaro/ Kean/ Anderson lies and media manipulation. Kean has overseen ELEVEN HOME DEFEATS and at each of those defeats there was little chanting to comment on and no protests. The players aren't babies, they know who the expressions of discontent are aimed at.
Defeats at home to poor Wolves, Everton and Bolton sides have sent us down, it's got nothing to do with fans expressing that discontent. Nobody can be surprised that, at 2-0 down at home after 20 mins to a Bolton side on a long winless run, there are calls for the manager's head.
Look at his record, he's barely won a quarter of his games. But with the help of his media chums and the demonising of the fans he is totally impervious to it AND STILL TAKEN US DOWN.
The whole ground chanting "KEAN OUT" isn't abuse it's a message. A message that Kean has chosen to ignore because our hapless, luckless, incompetent manager only cares about one thing: himself.

Most of Ewood sung "WE WANT VENKYS OUT" on ALL 4 SIDES and having just watched the replay on Sky it came over very loud and clear. MOTD meanwhile reported 300 marchers and skipped the bit when the singing was on!
.
It just proves 100% fans have to let their feelings be known inside the ground. Riverside was odd with all those empty seats which are ST holders - many have already given up and the 2 for £15, £5 kids sold like pig swill?
.
Norwich manager bemoaned how poor they were and that's why we should be cautious of any false hope.
.
Beating Wigan is a minimum but then we need to pull off a shock win at Spuds or Cheski and then still hope they slip up in other games.

These kind of rascals represent what is so reprehensible about the modern day SKY SPORTS era football fan - synthetic support and polyester passion.
The Ewood Spring/The Protest Movement - call it what you will - represents the best in Blackburn's loyal support: cheering the team and shouting for the town from the slopes of Ewood Park while denouncing the owners and the manager - and then, after they feel confident the team has secured victory.
The Happy-Clappers are court jesters; treat them with the derisory disdain that these fickle impostors deserve.

I don't think Wigan will beat Newcastle, I think if Rovers can beat Wigan then we have caught them.
However, Wigan have Wolves last day of season and we have Chelski. Maybe if we can pick up a point at either Spurts or Chelski... though i doubt that... still, it's not over.... yet.
I can see Wigan winning against Wolves on the last day of the season, that is my concern. Bolton could pick up a couple of points.
I think it may well come down to GD.

A couple of quotes written probably on Wed .............
"Those desparately (Sorry FR!) working out "points predictors" or whistfully fancying that Rovers are suddenly going to blossom can keep taking the happy Smarties. Because to do so is to ignore or deny the "all-enveloping" malaise and culture of incompetence and failure that has poisioned the club fom the moment the Walker Trust signed over the stewardship of this historic institution to buffoons"
.
And he finishes with ........
Kean this week said "We've been fantastic in every game" - I did not make the quote up, Kean actually said it. And as Kean's employers surprisingly sneaked in and out of Ewood without fanfar or fury last week, for the first time rather than projecting a comic aura, they wore the foreboding, disconcerting look of executioners and hangmen. I doubt they will be present again this season but should events unfold as expected the scenes at the Bolton game may be made to look against Wigan like footage of the "Summer of Love" at Woodstock in comparison.

You could also add that the manager didn't go out his way to be a pillock - which may be why they took it so well.
So what do we think of the way Wolves supporters reacted today when they went down? I am the first to concede that the set up at Wolves is totally different to ours. I always thought Morgan was a sound owner, but his knee jerk sacking of McCarthy at totally the wrong time screwed them up big time.
