STEVE Kean believes only Demba Ba can rival Yakubu as the Premier League’s bargain of the season – insisting that the Blackburn Rovers striker must now be worth close to £10m.
Yakubu needed only 15 minutes to score on his return from suspension on Saturday and help Rovers to a crucial 3-2 win over relegation rivals QPR.
Rovers snapped up the 29-year-old for only £1.5m from Everton in August but the forward has now netted 14 times for his new club this season.
And Kean believes that puts Yakubu alongside Ba, who has stolen the headlines by scoring 17 goals for Newcastle since joining the Magpies on a free transfer, as the best buy of the season.
“I think it’s probably been the Yak and Demba Ba,” the Rovers boss said.
“When you add together what those two have cost in comparison to some other strikers, then they have been the bargains of the season.
“Both have done really well. The mark of a goalscorer is his goal ratio, it’s not really how many games but how many chances does he get to score goals?
“If you look back at the goals the Yak’s scored this season, he’s not missed too many.
“He’s missed a few but normally when he gets a chance he hits the target.
“His chances to goal ratio would be right amongst the best.
“I would certainly think for him and Demba Ba it would be very hard to get change out of tens of millions.
“That’s what people who put the ball in the back of the net cost.”
Rovers signed Yakubu on a contract that will last until the summer of 2014, putting them in a strong position to bat away advances when clubs made their interest in the striker known in January.
QPR were among those clubs, although Yakubu has since revealed that he had no desire to leave Ewood Park in any case.
“There was absolutely no chance of us letting him go,” Kean said.
“There was interest, interest from some very big clubs, but the Yak’s happy to get his head down here.
“I think he’s been exceptional since he’s been here. We showed faith in bringing him here and he’s led the line really well.
“He’ll go on to be a great player for us for years to come.
“I don’t know why it didn’t work out for him at Everton.
“What we’ve done is given him the opportunity to start games and get back into the Premier League, and he’s more than showed he’s capable of playing week in week out.
“I think you’ve got to think about what his attributes are and we just like to keep him the width of the box and get other people to do a little bit of the chasing in the wider areas.
“If you can get quality service into him, there’s no better finisher.”
David Dunn missed Saturday’s game with a calf problem and Junior Hoilett limped off early in the second half, but Kean expects neither injury to prove serious.
“David failed a fitness test on Friday before training where he was feeling a little tug at the side of his calf,” he said.
“Junior had a kick in the calf, so it’s not a muscle tear, it’s just a dead calf.”
Jason Lowe, however, will be suspended for Rovers’ trip to Manchester City game on February 25 and the home match against Aston Villa a week later after picking up his 10th booking of the season.

It was an absolutely critical match for us to win if we are to stand any chance of staying-up. And we won it!
A lot of posters on here last week were saying how good QPR are now that Hughes is there and how now they spent money on decent players in January that they are guaranteed survival....well we beat the super R's and sent Hughes back down south with nothing.
We are not in the bottom group of teams fighting for survival for nothing, we are having a terrible season due to so many reasons all of which have been mentioned so many times before that I wont mention them here.
We are not a great team, we have a different defensive line-up every week and we are struggling for survival so to play well even in just one half of the game AND score three goals without reply is a pretty impressive display for any team in this position.
Yes QPR came out and played better the second half but isn't that what you would expect any team of Hughes to do? Did anyone expect us to score another three in the second half?
And yes QPR scored two goals (one very late on and too late to threaten the result) that took the edge off the scoreline a little, but we beat a fellow struggler and kept them deep in the relegation mix and gave ourselves another small lifeline towards the possibility of safety.
It was a crucial and oh so very important win and three points for us that will be so important to us by the end of the season.
Well done the lads! Allez les Bleus.

The most positive thing to come out of the weekend is that despite having a good manager QPR still have some poor players. Dont worry we will survive when Kean gets his experienced defenders back Nelsen, Samba and Salgado wasn't it?
But yes Allez les Bleus, we can stay up! Believe!

Kean made us into a 9-man team with his substitutions. Can anyone explain the Henley substitution?
This substitution was simply to protect what rovers already had, a three goal lead. Kean has done this before and it bachfired more than once and nearly did this time, he dosn't seem to learn from his mistakes, he should have continued with an attacking line up in the second half, as they say the best form of defence is attack.

.
Unfortunately we are stuck with Kean who is the biggest liability and proved it again on Saturday with his inept sub choices which nearly cost us against a team that forgot to turn up first half and has not jelled yet. Yet they still had four times more shots and 60% possesion!
.
All Rovers fans buy a rabbits foot - perhaps it could offset the influence of Kean?

I understand a defensive change but to replace a right midfielder with a full back on 46 minutes when we have Rochina and Vukcevic who have played in that position previously on the bench is just confusing. Its sad because I really rate Henley as a full back. A while ago (around November) Steve Kean told us that we were near the top of the "Half Time League" maybe we would be further up the Premier League without bizarre substitutions or thinking the game is won at half time?

I don't doubt that Kean is a numpty but to be fair to some of his signings, they aren't half as bad as people are making out.
Petrovic has begun to put in some good performances recently and Formica is starting to get his feet in the premier league.
Rochina has looked good when he's actually been allowed to play and Goodwillie has scored 4 in 8 starts (in all competitions).
There have been some awful signings as well such as Ribeiro, Anderson and Vukcevic and some others under par like Dann but his transfer record isn't terrible.
It's his inexplicable decision making at playing certain players over others, and subbing some of our best performers off that is truly shocking.

The few positive results we've managed this season really show our potential with the core set of players we have. It shows where we ought to be under the right management and investment.
As Andy Cryer has been saying on Twitter, the likes of Robinson, Samba, Olsson, N'Zonzi, Hoilett and Yak would all warrant a place in most of the teams around us. I'd probably add Peds and Givet (at CB) to that list too. Then there's the potential of Lowe and Hanley.

Not sure what the implications of overstating your crowd is legally. I know if you understate it, then you're probably robbing the taxman!

The comment made by Kean is fair I guess when he states that a striker is judged by his goals ratio and now rates Yak as £10 Million.
I would suggest that a manager is judged by his win ration, which makes Kean worth nothing but the sack!

I think the best we can hope for next weekend is that other teams around us don't pick up points.
If his performances were up to scratch for Rovers, he wouldn't have got any stick from anyone in the first place.
Furthermore, his post-transfer comments were directed towards the club as a whole - how it's run and how they dealt with him personally, not the fans.
I don't understand the Nelson business though. He was important on and off the pitch.
It wasn't too long ago Kean said he needed Nelson back to partner Samba.

Although we won on Saturday, anyone who went to that match would probably say that the dire 2nd half was down to Kean…. This is the first time that it has been so stark, due to the in match changes. Unless you are there watching the reaction and interaction of the players on and off the ball, it is impossible to make this judgement. If you don’t like others views make sure you are better informed than them, having not attended the game it is difficult to understand how you could be.
As for the MP, he has got documented and published, using his parliamentary privilege, the grievances of the Rovers support on an international stage. Given our dire situation this is a good thing, any pressure that can be placed on those responsible to sort it out, or even get out, is more than welcome in my view and I’m sure this is the view of the majority.

Tuo Neak wrote:I totally agree. The fact that QPR came back into the game on Saturday was was not down to Rovers' 'nerves', as some have suggested. It was purely down to Kean's ****-eyed substitution. Formica was having his best game yet for Rovers and taking him off made no sense. It ruined all the good work of earlier in the game. Why not replace Pedersen, who was relatively ineffective? The team does well DESPITE Kean, not because of him.
These are all very "positive" stories this weekend and quite rightly Yakubu should be praised for his contribution this season but surely the LT has to ask more questions rather than just print the party line. For example at the weekend "Kean hails Blackburn Rovers' first half display" what about the second half? When an injured Junior Hoilett was replaced by a 17 year old full back (from his reserve/academy performances a very good one) played on the right of midfield. Taiwo of QPR finally became free to bomb forward and expose Bradley Orr who in the first half was untroubled. The strange decision to replace Formica with Modeste, I have no problem with bringing on an additional forward but surely one more up to speed with the PL. The bench contained Vukcevic, Petrovic and Goodwillie all Kean signings yet none of them were good enough to make the field of play. Are these questions being asked by journalists? The first half showed exactly why Rovers can and should be able to stay in the league, the second half shows the reasons why we could be relegated while this man is in control of the team. All I can hope since he doesnt have the honour to resign is that the players keep us up despite him. Roll on Man City away

Yak has been a revelation for Rovers and Dann has, in my opinion, played to the value we paid for him. Credit for those, but what about all the rest?
The few positive results we've managed this season really show our potential with the core set of players we have. It shows where we ought to be under the right management and investment.
As Andy Cryer has been saying on Twitter, the likes of Robinson, Samba, Olsson, N'Zonzi, Hoilett and Yak would all warrant a place in most of the teams around us. I'd probably add Peds and Givet (at CB) to that list too. Then there's the potential of Lowe and Hanley.
Just another example of puppeteering, tbh.
On Saturday we had only been singing, 'Feed the Yak' for a minute or so and he scored. Quality.
And again, if he had shown his worth of salt he would not be boo'd in the first place. As most players in most teams aren't.
Arshavin was boo'd last week. Villa also boo'd their players last week. Wolves fans have boo'd all season. Newcastle boo'd their losing season. Bolton are boo'd constantly. It's part of the game.
If you really think it affects a players performance then that player isn't strong enough to be a professional footballer in the first place.
What would the Romans think...
We did perfectly well without him on Saturday, I have no idea who you think he should have played instead of.

Why have you blabbed on in your post about the worst case scenario not happening but conveniently ignored the promises (financial backing, players hitting the ground running, experience, 4 signings, etc) made to supporters which are the real cause for concern as well as results, lies, and the rest.
I'm quite sure you were one who advocated time for Kean's squad to settle, but are all to quick to criticise Hughes' loss at QPR within 3 weeks. Very good.
As I said, every supporter is enjoying this vital victory over QPR, EVERY supporter, nobody questions that. But at the same time, we're aware of the overall situation which IS dire - there are major concerns to most realistic fans about the tactics on display, managerial capabilities and owners which you seemingly want everyone to ignore.
YOUR first message on this article is a criticism of other fans opinions. Those you feel are "Dingles" and clearly disassociate yourself with who can look beyond a simple win. I'll be honest, I've never read anything valid from you, despite your self-important posts, but I have from most others...

Enjoy the valuable win for gods sake!

I respectfully disagree and in fact would suggest it's the opposite. Supporters are fully aware of the bigger picture - which is negative no matter which way it's spun - and want to debate that, having already acknowledged the important win at QPR.
However judging by your posts, anybody wanting to debate those wider issues is accused of behaving like a dingle which sometimes makes you come across as some sort of positive PR machine, hence the accusations by some others.
Anyway, I don't want a slanging match. I firmly believe we have the players necessary to stay in the Prem, whether or not we have the other staff for it is another question. One thing is for sure though, if we do stay up we'll be expected to be thankful and appreciative of that, despite being a top 10 team just 18 months ago.
And I do agree with your thoughts on the takeover bids and such. They're here to stay, but that's no reason to be apathetic about it.

How many have Rovers management team finished off. Stop trying to make out rovers management team are likened war criminals, what a fecking idiot you are Morst, I'm not suprised it gets shut down at weekends. You and the other bellends were told to stop posting unsubstantiated rumours and libelous comments on many occasion, but you just couldn't help yourself because you are that fecking stupid, you did it to yourself. The word dingle is above you. I don't listen to MP's as they tell more lies than Venky's. Theres only one person I listen to and thats me, my word is law there is nothing higher than me in this world except God almighty, so you keep listeming to your MP's an talking sh1t, it suits you and your MP.
KDG - you are unbelievable! Ever occur to you the reason there were not many posts was because the evil trio have stopped them at weekends because they did not like being told they are wrong. Stalin and Hitler had similar personalities?
.
Sounds like your one of them because again you refer not to the opinion of two local MP's who have stated their concerns in public, thousands of Rovers fans critical of whats going on, local businessmen also and your fellow posters, ex players etc etc?
.
And now your upset at the critical comments of you after abusing many true Rovers fans on here - well Boo Hoo!

I only mention dingles when Morst calls me Mrs desai for saying so and then starts spouting of his love of hitlers achievements. So learn to read before you wip yer kn@b out and dive in like Rooney in a care home.

"Trying to educate a shoe."
Who the hell do you think you are? And why would you be trying to educate an inanimate object? And why is your vocabulary so disgustingly offensive when you have criticised others for using such language in the past?
