Businessman bids to set up fans’ trust Rovers takeover, but Venky’s insist they won’t sell

BUSINESSMAN Wayne Wild has declared his ambition to lead a supporters’ trust takeover of Blackburn Rovers – but Venky’s continue to insist they will not sell.

Wolves’ 5-1 home loss to West Bromwich Albion yesterday meant that Rovers moved out of the relegation zone on goal difference following Saturday’s 3-2 home win against QPR, but Wild is putting a plan together in case the club are unable to retain their Premier League status this season.

The group director of Rovers’ main sponsor, WEC went public in November about his frustration at the current running of the club and intends to help set up the BRFC Supporters Investment Trust, giving Venky’s an option of relinquishing their ownership.

The group would then attempt to raise £10m with a share issue - aiming to sell 10,000 shares at £1,000 each – according to initial plans drawn up in the past few days, with help from Swedish-based American finance expert Daniel Grabko.

Venky’s, however, insisted in November that they had no intention of selling up amid interest from Qatar Petroleum.

Fellow businessmen and lifelong Rovers fans Ian Battersby and Ian Currie have also expressed their willingness to help with some sort of change of ownership should the Indian poultry company ever decide to sell.

But, asked by the Lancashire Telegraph yesterday whether their stance had changed in any way, a Venky’s spokesman simply reiterated: “We are not interested in selling the club.”

Grabko, also a supporter of the club, recently mooted an initial plan of selling 16,000 shares at £10,080 each by May 31 in order to launch a takeover.

But Wild admits that plan was too ambitious and a new proposal has been drafted, to be spearheaded by the WEC man.

Wild hopes Venky’s may accept a nominal fee to relinquish control of the club if Rovers went down, although he has so far been unsuccessful in attempts to contact them.

“It’s at the very early stages,” he told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“It would probably be after the end of the season until we could do anything, once we can see what the situation is.

“We have to be realistic and, if the club stay in the Premier League, Venky’s will probably think the club is still worth what they paid for it, and we wouldn’t be able to raise £30m.

“We had a good result against QPR but it’s three teams from five at the bottom.

“If the club is relegated will Venky’s still be interested in the club? It could go into decline.

“The club wouldn’t be worth anything so this would offer Venky’s a dignified way out because at the moment they haven’t got one.

“There’s no white horse man coming in to save Rovers right now.

“The £10m wouldn’t be towards buying the club but helping to deal with the debts.

“Could we raise £10m? Possibly. It’s about asking people now would they be interested in getting involved in this.

“There have been a few rumours about people being interested in takeovers but the only people you are likely to get interested are people who think they can make money out of it, wanting to buy it cheap and get a return on their investment.

“This wouldn’t be about getting any return on investment, this would be about giving the club back to the supporters.

“There would be no big shareholder, the supporters would own the club and a committee would be set up.

“I know Blackburn is not a wealthy town and £1,000 is a lot of money, but it’s probably half of a good holiday.

“If Venky’s say they won’t sell then we can’t force them to do, but we want to offer them a way out.”

Wild, who says the Investment Trust would also consider part ownership rather than a 100 per cent takeover if that proved more viable, recently offered to travel to India along with MPs Jack Straw and Jake Berry to discuss Rovers’ general situation. But he has so far receive no response from Venky’s.

There are plans to hand out leaflets to fans about the Investment Trust at the next home game - against Aston Villa on March 3.

And Wild says his strategy has the support of the Blackburn Rovers Action Group, who opted not to protest at the QPR game amid developments with the potential plan.

“If the club is relegated will Venky’s still be interested in the club?" - Think the answer there Wayne is that they would have to be interested in the first place. The reason the club needs saving now is because they've effectively left it to rot, though I have to admit I'm shocked that they still don't want to sell.

By the way, "white horse man" = white knight, Wayne :-p

Surely Venky's have to come out of their shell to enter into some level of discussion about this proposal from Wayne?

Even if they do not want to sell the club then they should still be prepared to discuss their plans for the club (be it in the prem or championship) in light of this serious and helpful proposition.

A joint venture between Venkys and a Supporters Trust would appear to be a good model to go forward with that could appeal to Venkys style of long distance management.

People still don't get it! They (Venky's) haven't yet extracted the maximum they intend to take out of the club. Until they bleed us dry, they won't sell. The only reason Samba wasn't sold is they think they will get more for him in the summer. It certainly wasn't determination on their part to hang on to key players. Open your eyes folks, these people are far from naive. Well done the team for scraping the points we have in spite of the management/owners being such a dreadful bunch.

Article seems to suggest raising £10 million. Venky's won't sell for anything NEAR that. As BJS (quoted) says, they intend tp bleed club dry. The land at Brockhall used for training grounds has got to be worth approaching £10 million on it's own!

Robbie says...
10:28am Mon 13 Feb 12

they cant sell the land at brockhall or ewood, due to covenants added to the title of the land when the walker trust sold it.

phia012 says...
11:00am Mon 13 Feb 12

They also couldn't build at brockhall due to planning restrictions on land within the 'countryside' designation. This would make it only useful as farmland meaning the value is around £5k per hectare plus the value of any existing buildings - significantly lower than the cost to build even a cheap training ground elsewhere.

Venky must now sell this great club to the people of Blackburn. They are not interested in football neither wants to invest in Blackburn Rovers FC.Blackburn wants an investment of around £40 million on new players at this moment. We can't even compete with likes of QPR never mind Man Utd and Man City.Venky must invest or sell up and go back and take Kean with you to India.

Put me down for a share. But I too do not believe there would be any club left to pick up the pieces of once the Indian asset strippers have finished. It wouldn't surprise me to find the stands sold for hard core and reclaimed steel. All players sold and all that is left is a patch of turf.

However, in order for them to get their way and make money of of Rovers, they need the club to fail. Once bankrupt they can start to sell bit by bit.

stephenrover says...
12:03pm Mon 13 Feb 12

Could somebody please elucidate me as to the asset stripping situation? Is it actually economically viable for them to asset strip? You sort of imagine that it isn't, because if it was surely people would have been queueing up to make a fast million.

Sadly although the income expected from fans is more realistic than last time if it can still be spread over 5 years (?) it leaves the income generated reduced by 95% and therefore nowhere near that required to run a club.
.
Even the Walker Trust found the cost to much. Good luck but its a fairy tale I think.
.
Best bet would be to get a group of multi millionaires together if they exist and then perhaps ask fans to buy 10% or 20% of the shares for £10m. But do these people exist?

Great sentiments from people who really care about the club, but unfortunately 10 million doesn't come near to buying the club and wouldn't be anywhere near enough to keep the club in the Premiership.

Venkys don't own Ewood or Brockhall and they would ask a ridiculous price for their investment or lack of investment, difficult to put a price on it since nobody knows what they've put in or taken out!

Perhaps the Walker Trust would give the Ground and Brockhall to the fans! It would be interesting to hear what the Walker Trust think of the present situation, but since they've said nothing for about 12 years there's not much chance of that either.

I'd echo roverswiss in that this is a genuinely heartfelt idea by people who obviously care about the club.

However, I don't think it would get off the ground for two reasons:

1. Venky's refusal to entertain the idea of selling. For what it's worth, I don't think they care about the club, but it's a great advertisement tool, and even if it ends up in the championship, they'll be getting their money's worth.

2. The 'investment' opportunity

Rovers as a club isn't a sensible investment, that's why it took so long to sell in the first place. The club doesn't make any money and anyone putting money in should expect to lose a significant proportion of it. We as fans might like to think that we'd rescue the club, but not many will want to throw £1000 at it. This is the reason I was so sceptical about investment in the first place. You need either a billionaire who's happy to lose money on a whim, or someone who loves the club and prepared to put its financial needs before their own family.

It is all well and good a 'Venky's spokesman' saying the club is not for sale, we all need some answers to some very serious questions.

Given what Graham Jones said in parliament last week, I think the premier league is duty bound to look into matters. Accusations were made to suggest that premier league rules were broken, so I think the premier league need to get some answers to all this and fast.

It is pretty obvious to each and every fan that the owners do not have the best intentions of the club as being top of the agenda, so what is their agenda?

Liverpool managed to force their previous owners out, who were reluctant to seel, so what not us?

The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) significantly weakens designations such as Open Coutryside, Green Belt, Landscapes of Value etc precedants are currently being set for this in the planning system. Given the current extent of residential development at the site I would think that the area is potentially ripe for development - Gerald Hitman was trying his best to do this on the site and the Tory's are going someway to assist this idea. Not only that Ribble Valley have significant housing targets to meet....any type of sell off/money making off the back of Brockhall would be the death knell for me. Our youth set up is excellent and is the future for a cost effective sustainable side and avoids the need to bring in ageing Galacticos's etc.

The Premier League isn't a multi million pound industry any more, it is a multi billion pound industry.
The Walker Trust couldn't wait to get rid despite the history and despite having immediate access to more than £300m to bail out the club if necessary, or should I say, if they wanted to. They got rid of the club because it a financial disaster that they knew was going to get ten times worse.
£10 million? And how long do we think that will last?
I applaud the sentiments but there is an increasing number of people coming to the fore who are more interested in their own PR and profile than looking at the best interests of the club.
I've a funny feeling I know who the Chair and Vice Chair of the Trust might be. Then again they can't be any worse than what we've got now I suppose.

Yeah, but 35 million in players lets say, relegation payments... This alone pays what they paid for the club... Then you have the club as a whole after that which includes Ewood and brockhall... Any business man with a good few million to splash and likes the club could pick it up off them at a bargain price! That just leaves us in a $hit position fighting on the championship with no premier league players... And venkys with a 2-3 year investment which has made them some pretty substantial profits... I've been saying this is the way football has been going for years and although unproductive to this comment it's true! Still.. Makes for a good league to watch! In other news... Rangers - administration! Just goes to show that it doesn't matter on the size of the club, football is starting to get too big for its boots and I can see a lot of this happening over the next decade!

Just a hunch.....

It would be very interesting to find out the reason, why the "next Chris Smalling" has not even got a place on the bench, in the twelve months he has been at Ewood.

When they first bought the club you couldn't keep them quiet, they were constantly on about this and that, for weeks, however for the past however many months they havent spoken or said anything!. The only person to communicate with them is seemingly Steve Kean.

I need some clarification over this Ewood / Brockhall thing.
Do we know for fact Venkys have no claim over them?
If not, who owns them?
Does this mean Venkys 'rent' the playing stadium facility? If so how can they ban banners etc. (if indeed THEY did)?
If they do not own Brockhall, who does? Does this mean they rent this facility?
Who and when decided that the facility changed from 'Academy' to 'Senior Training Facility' (as named)? Does this have any significance at all?
Lastly: You couldn't benefit from any land development at Brockhall (in lieu of a 'facility'). That is just pie in the sky.
This can be altered by the swipe of a pen in minutes.
