Samba’s return to be delayed, reveals boss

STEVE Kean has revealed that Chris Samba’s return to action has been delayed and he will not now feature in tonight’s reserve match at home to Wigan.

Samba has not played for Rovers since the Premier League defeat at home to Stoke on January 2 after declaring his intention to leave the club.

QPR had two bids rejected for the defender but the January transfer window passed with Samba still at Ewood.

Kean said late last week that he hoped Samba could take part in tonight’s second string game at Leigh Sports Village, kick-off 7pm, to build up match fitness ahead of a potential first-team return.

The 27-year-old had been due to feature in a behind closed doors game against Carlisle last Tuesday but Kean revealed he withdrew with a hamstring injury, which will now further delay his comeback.

“I don’t think he’ll play in the reserve game,” the Rovers boss said.

“But he’s got the all clear on an MRI scan, which is the more detailed one that tells us there’s no tear in his hamstring, so he’ll be back in full training and will crack on from there.”

With Rovers out of the FA Cup, their next first-team game is not until the trip to Manchester City on February 25.

Club officials have been in talks with Samba since the closure of the transfer window in a bid to get him refocused on helping Rovers stay in the Premier League.

Reports have suggested that Samba may be eager to renegotiate his contract to insert a release clause, allowing him to leave Ewood in the summer.

Kean, however, denied that the club were holding discussions over a new deal.

“No, he’s got a four-year contract still in place,” said the Rovers boss.

In Samba’s continued absence Scott Dann and Grant Hanley paired up at centre back in Saturday’s 3-2 home win over QPR, as Rovers bounced back from their 7-1 thrashing at Arsrnal a week earlier.

Hanley impressed in front of Scotland manager Craig Levein, having been restored to the line-up following Gael Givet’s suspension.

“I thought Scott Dann and Grant Hanley were exceptional,” Kean said.

“For Grant it was probably a bigger game because he was unfortunate to find himself out of the side when Scott Dann came back a few weeks ago.

“But he’s come back in again and has made massive progress. Craig Levein was here watching him and I’m sure he’ll play for the national team and kick on.”

If we believe this we will believe anything. Rovers are going down, end of.
I will never go on Ewood again so long as Venky's own the club, guaranteed.

Great move Venky's keeping hold of Samba to pay his wages, you clearly know what you are doing :/

Saturday was the clearest sign yet of Keans tactical ability, the substitutions were completely baffling, and the extra striker????

With tactics like this it will be a miracle if we manage to stay up!

Welcome three points but 'played with blocks attached to feet' in second half - again NO real structure of strength in defence!!! Still in deep trouble being seven points adrift to main bunch - City next, so wait with baited breath on Kean's formation and further 'bed time stories ' about Samba.
Mr Kean cant stop telling 'porky pies' and whats worst he's told that many he now belives them himself!!!
My view is still the same OUT WITH KEAN AND OUT WITH THE VENKYS

Saturday's first half....very acceptable display, showed great promise. But then! half time, Steve Kean's "pep" talk. Disaster! Second half unbelievable! Again we were lucky to survive an onslaught from the away side. Many more minutes of play and we would have conceded amother lead. As for Hoilett, could I plead with referees to at least give him a bit of protection! He was kicked from pillar to post. No wonder he had to go off injured. We want to see the type skilful play he provides, not seeing him being hacked down in full flight!

We should ban Kean from the dressing room he seems to demotivate the players and they fall back into chaos.

I thought Black may be the man to sort us out but we have not changed one iota from last season with or without Samba.

What does he say to them at half time?! I've never seen a team concede so many 2nd half goals!

Look at Norwich, Newcastle etc and we've thrown it away so many times!

We lost the 2nd half at Arsenal 4-0 and the 2nd half against QPR 2-0. Most managers try and inspire their players at the break!

well done Rovers, three oh so valuable points gained against what many Rovers fans were calling a great? QPR team that was sure of safety now Hughes was manager there. A game of two halves definitely but then when you are down where we are that has to be expected. a really good win!

My money is unfortunately on QPR to finish higher up than us simply because of Keans half time talks and pathetic team organisation.

I couldn't believe my eyes when Kean seemed to indicate to the players to push up and break with urgency - all that was required was for us to keep possession..... Seeing that has left me gravely concerned, I will be genuinely surprised if we stay up.

QPR first half performance was one of the worst displays by a visiting team to Ewood for years. Couldn't believe it was a team managed by M.H.

Yet more lies from Kean's mouth, injured indeed, he hasn't played for a month or more now so how can he be injured.

As for Samba I think the club need to start fining him his weekly wages it's gone on to long now, we need him playing and he is being paid £60,000 a week to do nothing at the moment, he's not even training from what I have read. Besides which who does he think is going to want to sign him in the summer if he doesn't / hasn't played for 6 months.

From what I understand it's because LT doesn't have anyone in over the weekend to check what poster's have written and given the threats that have come from a certain agent what else can they do. They won't want to pay someone just to do that newspapers are already short staffed.

A much needed three points on Saturday which I dindn't see coming I have to admit.
This situation with Samba is pathetic and smacks of very poor man management. I agreed with not allowing him to go in the transfer window especially to one of our competitors for the drop in QPR....how they need a good centre half it seems from the first half on Saturday! Just think if Samba had been there in a QPR shirt we could now be facing the abyss! I can understand Samba feels let down BUT at the end of the day he signed a five year contract and a very well paid contract. He was probably given assurances (champions league football new marquee signings etc etc) from Venkys and Kean which turned out to be lies so he is disappointed about all of that.

Totally understandable and so say all of us!!

That said now it is time for Samba to grow some balls and get his head right and get on that pitch to help his team mates stave off relegation. If he could do that he should then be allowed to leave at the end of the season if he so wishes and he would go with his head held high in that he had done his bit for our cause.

At the moment he has the hallmarks of a "captain deserting his post too quickly" which seems popular at the moment?

Grow up Samba and earn your money!!

last time we had a player in this predicament Mark Hughes managed to get city to stump up £17 million for Santa Cruz, will we see history repeat itself? It certainly has done so far, in that we have an unhappy player.....

It would be nice if someone could ask Kean why does he keep taking off Formica when once again he was our most influential midfield player. He enabled Nzonzi and Lowe to play some good stuff by ocupying their defensive midfield. Once off they were able to take control. Keep him on for goodness sake for the whole 90 mins if not injured.

My understanding is that unless Samba is offered a new contract, letting him leave for much less than the Venkys currently value him at in the summer, then he wont play again this season.
-
I have no idea why Kean has to lie, everyone knows he is about as injured as Nelson was.
-
Kean just lies and lies and lies and does whatever the Venkys want. What a loyal puppet, a puppet with absolutely no integrity whatsoever.

Agree totally with your comment.

Puzzling stuff by Kean Saturday with the subs ?

He appears to give the opposition impetus & encouragement to attack resulting in hanging on for the precious 3 points.

I see distinctive parallel's from Saturday as to that at Wolves on the last day of the season.

Formica & N'zonzi had blinders on Saturday.

MM just sacked at Wolves ! Could this see Wolves go on an adrenalin run with new manager in place ?

Ah well, 3 points felt good.

I wonder if Steve Kean watched the end of the Spurs Newcastle game and saw Ryan Nelsen doing what he does best - excellent positioning and reading of the game and organising the defenders round him.

It is no coincidence that Rovers fail to keep a clean sheet this season because they lack organisation at the back - what is the point in having Robninson as captain - he is a great keeper but lacks authority on crosses often putting themselves under pressure.

Kean will note that Mick McCarthy has left Wolves and must be grateful to our owners for their support. I wonder why

Why is it so important for Samba to play a reserve game,Nelsen played on sunday without a gamefor months. Is it because Harry can trust Nelsen but kean wants loyalty from Samba but can't put his trust in him.
Can anyone explain why formica had to come off on Saturday.

Substitutions on Saturday changed the game - fortunately Rovers held on. Hoillett was obviously injured but Henley on the right wing why. The obvious danger was SWP so I would have expected Henley to double up with Olssen to provide cover. If he wanteda winger why not Vuckevic whose defensive qualities are better than Hoillett will ever be. As for Formica he was fully involved in midfield as well as breaking forward so why take him off for Modeste who looked like a fish out of water with Yak up front - Vuckevic and ~Rochina must wonder what they are doing at Ewood when out of position subs are brought on before them. Goodwillie similarly gets in goalscoring positions and works back so obviously Kean thinks Modeste didnt deserve to be left on the bench so better play him

As for Samba will he ever be fit or is it really Keans pride that is hurt? It seems like you are either in his clique or you are out of contention - not brilliant man management but then you are never sure what he says he means is true either.

Fell that while the protests have died down - the fans still think the same way as before it is just Venkys have gone AWOL must have gone up the Amazon with their Brazillian Manager - he did just come for a holiday during the transfer windowor was there a purpose?

Amazing to see the effect of bullying tactics from Mr. "my solicitor is bigger then your solicitor" Anderson.
Thankfully LET have removed the "chosen" photo of Kean, yet it is sad that the fans comments cannot be made over the weekends now....isolatng more supporters by the week has seen in the attendance figures of late.
Also the continuing non-communication from the "owners" !
It seems to be their management culture, or is it that Anderson and Co are the main controlling unit within the club !
It definitely shows the Venky,s very much out of their depth in the Football world.
I thought "ianwhittam" posted some excellent comments on the Yakubu story about the state of the club and unfortuate characters associated with the club right now.
Conman Kean continues to try justifying his mistakes (wiser after the events of course !) and to try associate himself with anything positive.
The general tone is set for the rest of the season and for the suporters prepared to hang on until May, it is going to be one hell of a ride.
Obviously Nelson,s fitness anyother of the many deceitful comments by Kean. More likely he made it very clear his thoughts on the many internal issues.
Do hope he enjoys success at Spurs and maybe another 12 months contract.
