JASON Roberts has been named in Blackburn Rovers’ senior Premier League squad today after the transfer window slammed shut with him still at Ewood Park.
The striker had agreed with Sam Allardyce it would be best for him to move on if possible but, with no acceptable offer having been made, he remains a Rover.
Rovers were expecting a Premier League club, understood to be Wigan, to make a bid yesterday.
The lack of movement meant Rovers dropped their interest in Bulgarian Ivelin Popov.
Roberts is unlikely to be allowed out on loan once the window opens again for Championship clubs.
This afternoon, Rovers announced a 21-man squad to comply with new rules which mean top-flight clubs have to register a maximum of 25 players with the Premier League.
It leave four available spaces should any free agents attract Rovers’ attention.
The full squad is: Paul Robinson; Jason Brown; Frank Fielding; Mark Bunn; Chris Samba; Gael Givet; Pascal Chimbonda; Ryan Nelsen; Brett Emerton; Vince Grella; Steven Nzonzi; Keith Andrews; Michel Salgado; David Dunn; Martin Olsson; Morten Gamst Pedersen; El-Hadji Diouf; Nikola Kalinic; Mame Biram Diouf; Jason Roberts; Benjani.
In addition, Rovers have seven players under the age of 21: Aaron Doran, Gavin Gunning, Grant Hanley, Junior Hoilett, Phil Jones, Amine Linganzi and Josh Morris.
Changes can be made to the squad once the transfer window re-opens in January.

the thing with JR is you know what your going to get, hes a work horse and puts a shift in, but at prem level it isnt enough. in saying that ide rather have him available and an option than just have the 3 out and out forwards.
for all you who dont remember or have never heard of Don Martin, he was our star striker in the late 60's and 70's does anybody remember him going in the nets and having a blinder, i think it was qpr and a midweek match and it ended up 0-0,
this was the days before multi subs too.
the chant in those days was
'come on without
come on within
you aint seen nothing
don martin'
sung with much gusto to the tune of the mighty quinn by manfred mann
here endeth the lesson
to all true rovers fans out there
keep the faith

And surely, if Rovers wanted shut of him so badly then they could have given him away for free to get him off the wage bill (and then sign a replacement).
I read somewhere that JR is on £35k a week! Couldnt believe it was that much! Would make sense why we wanted him off the wage bill and probably why nobody would take him off us!

Six English-men, three of them GK's.

After going 0 - 2 down early on in the game, Rovers went on to win 5-2. Plymouth were our main rivals for the title at that point and we went on to win the league over Plymouth by a point. I seem to recall that Don Martin had a fantastic game that day.

Jason Roberts plays for Granada, but was born in England. Also, as has been stated many times, he played for an English club for three years before he was 21. Therefore it does not matter where he was born or what country he plays for! Doesnt Cesc Fabregas count in these rules? I dont really see how it helps the development of English players like it was supposed to. It just means English clubs will buy foreign players younger! Why not have 4 keepers in the 25? We dont have any other outfield players to fill the spaces!
