FULL-TIME: Blackburn Rovers 1 AEK Athens 2

EWOOD Park has been surrounded by doom and gloom this summer but bright young star Phil Jones continues to suggest he will illuminate the Premier League stage for years to come.

Rovers crashed to a 2-1 defeat to AEK Athens yesterday morning, their second defeat in two games in the Sydney Festival of Football, but 18-year-old Jones’ second half display should have been a tonic for those worried Rovers fans.

Rovers boss Sam Allardyce was quick to point out post match that his youngsters still have a lot to learn after seeing the inexperie-nced centre half pairing of Jones and Grant Hanley pulled apart by the Greeks as they scored twice in three first half minutes to leave his side a mountain to climb.

But Jones was the driving force behind Rovers’ spirited second half fight back as, as well as scoring his first senior goal for the club, he seemed to be all over the field as he looked to add that missing spark to Rovers’ display.

Undoubtedly Allardyce’s solution to his striker search will prove to be his most important signing this summer but securing Jones on a five-year deal earlier this summer has to be a close second.

It won’t be long before the big guns are sniffing around one of the country’s hottest young prospects but, now committed on a long-term deal, it would take a huge amount of money to temp Rovers into a sale.

With talk of takeover frustration, failure to land a striker and a run of four straight pre-season defeats, you can understand why some of the blue and white army appear to be losing the faith.

But let’s keep things in perspective. Allardyce has yet to play his first team together yet, Nikola Kalinic’s injury signif-icantly weakens current striking options and, most importantly, it is still only pre-season.

This is the stage of the season where you want your manager to experiment, give all his players a run and work them hard in training for fitness.

Remember what happened after a poor summer in 1994/95. Premier League champions anyone?

Of course, the ease at which Athens seemed to be able to penetrate Rovers back line in the opening half an hour was a concern but it is highly unlikely two 18-year-olds, Jones and Hanley, will be paired together this season.

While individually both have shown more than enough to suggest they are ready for the Premier League, you get the feeling the likes of Chris Samba and Ryan are still needed to help them along in their progression.

In torrential rain, Rovers actually started well but early optimism soon drained away as the Greeks took the lead on 22 minutes.

Australian Nathan Burns led Jones a merry dance down the right and his low cross was collected by Nacho Scocco who, after turning inside Steven Nzonzi, curled the ball past Paul Robinson.

Their lead was doubled two minutes later as, with Rovers’ defence caught napping, Leonardo’s right wing cross was volleyed home by the unmarked Nikos Liberopoulos.

Jones looked to take matters into his own hands as he drove through AEK’s defence on 33 minutes but no-one was in the box to convert his low cross.

Lack of attacking threat was then Rovers’ biggest problem, especially after the break, as they dominated large spells of possession without hurting the Greek defence.

Robinson had to be alert to stop Burns on 54, after an underhit Chimbonda back pass, but it was Rovers who did most of the second half running without much reward.

Jones though got Rovers back into the fiery encounter when he headed home Morten Gamst Pedersen’s cross on 82 but, despite late pressure, an equaliser was not forthcoming.

Rovers line-up: Paul Robinson, Lars Jacobsen, Phil Jones, Grant Hanley, Gael Givet (Chimbonda 39), Brett Emerton (Junior Hoilett 60), Keith Andrews, Steven Nzonzi (El-Hadji Diouf 71), Martin Olsson (Josh Morris 67), David Dunn (Morten Gamst Pedersen 57), Jason Roberts.

Subs not used: Michel Salgado, Mark Bunn, Vince Grella, Maceo Rigters.

1-2 loss

That old ginger nut Robbie Slater was commentating on this game for Fox …for the last 20 min Rovers have improved said the little Aussie…couldn’t have played any worse.

.
…Big fat Sam is complaining about AEK’s rough tactics & blaming the two young centre halfs ….Can you believe this idiot …Jones was far and away the best player on the pitch and scored a goal to boot, something Roberts could only dream about!
.
Hard long season if these friendly games are to go by.

I very much doubt it. Not a wise thing to read too much into pre-season games. Amazing comments from a Claret given the 1 year in 35 in the top flight;-)

I think the Jo story could have somthing in it because he will not be in city 25 man squad that all squads have to hand in the the premier league and they will be happy to let him go or get him on loan.

Good call re: Jones. He looks more like a striker than Di Santo or Hoillet and stood out a mile for Rovers tonight - definitely worth a shot up front (or even gingering up a bit of action in midfield, where we are currently woeful). He is definitely the goods and one of the best I've seen coming through Rovers' ranks in many a season. Rest were generally embarrassing (OK Pedersen and Diouf not bad tonight), none more so than BFS the archetypal Whingeing Pom! In games here against decent, but far from world class, opposition, Hanley has looked totally out of his depth, ditto Andrews, Morris, Emerton, Grella, Roberts - why do we persist with these journeymen?
I even found myself agreeing with the despicable Bosnich, that under BFS they seem incapable of changing their boring and predictable type of play. I'm over here and watching for free, but it must stick in the crow to watch this cr-p and pay for it at sunny Ewood (like I did for 30+ years).

Nelson Claret : I suppose you can comment on Rovers articles, but since you support a club thats basically done f**k all in football since the early 60s and is widely regarded within the game as a laughing stock, people will not attach much weight to your obsertvations;-)

Better learning from pre season mistakes than when it will really count when the season starts. I dont like us losing but on the other hand lets not try to read too much into the no wins like some Mysic meg's.

The point that Tetley is trying to make is that after the last 30 years of Blackburn's total dominance of East Lancs football, you Dingle's really haven't got anything to crow about (and that's without even referring to last season). Am I correct, or am I correct?

hasslem hasslem - nope, just a poor internet connection, and Tetley Drinker, I believe my observations should have weight attached to them (if your lot had any sense at all) given that it is blatantly obvious that your lot indeed support hypocrisy, and if you can't accept that just because of the team I support then you really are just pig ignorant....oh no, we don't like it now that BFC fans are coming and laughing at us on a BRFC article when we do it to them every single day of the week; we don't give a monkeys what you think of our club and I REALLLLY don't wish to comment on BRFC articles at all ever in my life because I really do have that much disregard for them and do not care what goes on there (as should you if you were a true Wover) but thought it wise to point this out so maybe, just maybe, we could be left in peace to have reasonable debates about OUR team on articles about them instead of having to just constantly fend off pee pee takers, however, that assumes that you are somewhat intelligent and reasonable people capable of mutual decency; the responses suggest otherwise

Your absolutely correct Phil,

Its not just BRFC people who regard Burnley as a joke club : that view is taken within the wider game, really seriously, the club is regarded as total s***e by those in the know.

Notice you dont deal with the 40 games point and that pre-season games dont neccessarily mean that much. The 2 games lost were against the Scottish champions and one of the top cluns in Greece, and regular Champions League participants which is a bit stiffer opposition than essentially pub teams in Siongapore. Just over 12 months ago people like you were spouting about Burnley going into Europe and becoming a Premiership force, and that Blackburn were set for relegation. Look what happened. Do you never learn? And im not even a Blackburn fan.

I can't believe all this infantile squabbling.. I've got two under fives in the next room who don't bicker as much nor as inanely.

Anyway, I watched the first half. A meeting made me the miss the supposed 'come back' during the second half. They were poor. Terrible defensively excluding a valiant effort by Jones, by far the best player for Rovers in defence, midfield and attack! Unimaginative going forward, hoisting the ball forward with hope rather than any skill or purpose. I've heard mutterings amongst fans about Roberts and I've never much rated him. Today did nothing to change my opinion and did much to back up the increasing malcontent.

Rovers always seem to make me nervous during the build up to the new season but even on past outings this has been a pretty torrid period of play.

I just hope they pull themselves together. I'm sure and dearly hope they will - they can't get much worse, to be honest!

Well tetley drinker certainly appears to make himself out to be a wover; and why should i address the 40 games point and whatever other "facts" you're talking; joke club or not, that is just your opinion and we will continue to support our joke club win lose or draw for as long as it continues to exist; my point was nothing to do with football facts/stats/superior
ity just one of plain common sense and as previously said, mutual decency for other people's passions; believe it or not it makes absolutely no difference to me or any other BFC fan whether you think our club is a joke or not or if you are so well positioned and connected to know that everyone in football agrees; I think that the majority of both clarets and wovers would appreciate a mutual ceasefire on the articles relating to their respective clubs so that each can be left in peace to have reasonable debates amongst fellow fans; that is the bee all and end all of my original comment which I have now had to retaliate to 3 times because of your blatant ignorance of decency

There doesn't seem to be much 'admiration' for your beloved Rovers from the 'supporters' either?

Or is it that no one remembers the day Jack bought the Prem title because it is such a long time ago? And let's face it the Prem these days is much faster and more difficult to compete in than it was then.
Which explains why your club has not even come close to winning anything since?
