Brown should have had more time - Coyle

OWEN Coyle reckons Hull City should have given Phil Brown more time to save the club from relegation.

The former Wanderers skipper was sacked as manager of Hull City earlier this week after a run of four straight defeats had left them second bottom of the table.

Brown had guided the Tigers to the top flight for the first time in their history, keeping them up against the odds last season, but was replaced on Wednesday by Iain Dowie with the club three points adrift of safety.

Coyle believes his former team-mate was harshly treated — and he believes the same can be said for Tony Mowbray, who is feeling the pressure of public expectation north of the border at Celtic.

“Phil’s a good friend of mine and arguably the most successful manager in Hull City’s history,” he said.

“And yet he’s been got rid of because of football’s recently developed habit of wanting everything yesterday.

“It’s a problem for society, never mind football, and it’s getting worse.

“Who’s to say what Phil might have achieved in the fullness of time for Hull? And who knows what Tony’s capable of achieving at Celtic Park if he gets the chance to prove he is the right man for the job?

“I assume that when those in control of Celtic appointed Tony they had a belief in him and were impressed by his demeanour and ideas.

“Now they have to prove they can see the big picture instead of bowing to pressure from any external sources.”
