GARY Cahill sees no reason why he can’t quickly get up to speed after his return to full training.
The Whites defender rejoined his team-mates late last Friday for the first time since early February, when he was diagnosed with a blood clot in his upper arm.
He is now back in full-contact training and working towards match fitness, and while he acknowledges this weekend’s game at Everton is likely to come too soon, he does not envisage too many problems getting back on track.
“It was nice to be back outside with the lads instead of doing work in the gym,” he said. “Everyone wants to get out playing football, so hopefully I can get a good week of training under my belt.
“It’s a case of working hard and getting back up to match sharpness. It’s not been the longest injury or illness, so it has been easy to slot straight back in.
“But you are bound to lose a little bit of your fitness because, obviously, you have been out of the game. Nothing is better than playing games when you are fit so, hopefully, I can play a part in the rest of the season, and I’m looking forward to it now.”
Owen Coyle was also happy to welcome the 24-year-old centre half back to the fold, after being unable to call on his services for the last 10 games in league and cup.
“It’s terrific to have Gary back training with the group,” he said. “We are all very pleased with his progress and we will keep monitoring him and then take it from there.”
