Blackburn Rovers look to hijack Sunderland's Bent swoop

BLACKBURN Rovers are considering attempting to hijack Sunderland’s protracted move for Tottenham’s Darren Bent as they continue their search for a ‘proven Premier League’ striker.

With around £13million in his transfer kitty, Rovers boss Sam Allardyce is contemplating making a move for the unsettled Bent in the belief he fits the bill as a worthy Roque Santa Cruz replacement.

Rovers are yet to launch an official bid for the former Charlton man but are aware of his situation and are poised to swoop should Sunderland continue to delay their efforts in the transfer market.

Steve Bruce’s Sunderland remain favourites to land Bent, with new owner Ellis Short bolstering their financial clout, but sources from the north east club have indicated they remain reluctant to provide Spurs with immediate cash flow.

Both clubs have Manchester City’s Richard Dunne, Portsmouth’s Peter Crouch and Paraguayan defender Paulo Da Silva in their sights but Spurs are understood to need the money from Bent’s transfer to step up their hunt for fresh blood.

Sunderland therefore are reluctant to boost their rivals’ coffers, leaving Rovers the chance to step in and take advantage of their continued stalling.

With Bent seemingly not set to figure in Harry Redknapp’s plans next season at White Hart Lane, he remains keen on a fresh start and is believed to be growing increasingly frustrated at the current inactivity.

Sunderland were understood to have been close to an £8million deal for Bent last season and it is believed that figure again would be enough to capture the services of the England striker.

Rovers would not be prepared to enter a bidding war with Bruce’s Sunderland though, knowing the Wearsiders have vast financial resources, but are monitoring the situation closely.

Should Allardyce’s Bent chase prove fruitless, he may be forced to turn his attention to the foreign market and a list of potential targets he has already drawn up.

Very positive. Big, strong, powerful & stil young enough & good enough to be an england regular given the chances! And could leave us with a few pennies for dealings in the transfer market! Good times!

Too right, if we sign Bent thats another player vying for a starting place (however unlikely) for the England squad, hence some good performances to be expected from.

Hope we get Di Santo too, exciting prospect.

Another good player, Kenwyne Jones also been mentioned in the news, suits sam's style of play surely.

if he gets bent and Di Santos he isnt going to spend more on another striker in beattie. He has already informed us that he after getting two strikers in he wants to try and buy some midfielders. So If we can Bent and another I wouldnt want a third as we could then use that to get someone creative player not sure what ever else thinks

The reason why only 14,500 season tickets have been sold is because the rest of them will be at Turf moor watching the mighty clarets play proper premier league football on doctors advice, as they all suffered neck injuries last season watching `kick high and hope`football.

Starting to look good now, and by what Sams said he'll be bringing in a few more faces to bolsten up the squad. Agree with you mostly about your competition for places, but have to make a few changes.

Givet/Warnock/Olsson (left back)

Emerton/Jacobsen (right back)

Diouf/Nzonzi (right wing - attack mid)

Come on Rovers!! Top half finish this season!!!

Got to agree with tatts, plenty of goals to be seen when watching the Dingles play, I believe their goalkeeper is on a productivity bonus. £1,000 every time he picks the ball from the back of his net. Will be on his way to being a millionaire by the end of the season.

also i dont see how we can only have sold 14500 season tickets. when you look on the one rovers website the blackburn end and riverside are sold out and there are plenty of season tickets sold in the Jack Walker stand. any offical word on season tickets sales?

I can see sam bringing in a few free transfers in. we have £13million, i dont think money for givet came out of that as that was agreed before the sale of roque n derbs and so far we have spent £400,00 on N'Zonzi so leaving us 12.6million.

Bent £8m
Vieri (if he impresses) Free Transfer
Di Santo Loan

and like i said i can see a couple of free transfers and hopefully a cretive midfielder although if dunn stays fit we have a good creative midfielder in him

i dont rate warnock in midfield mate, just looks a little clumsy at time, maybe its because for the majority of the season he had a different midfield partner or not, but prefer him at left back, where he can bomb down the wings as he does so well

Skysports.com understands Inter Milan midfielder Patrick Vieira met with Birmingham City officials on Wednesday. Why dont we make a move for Vieira. We can then have the future Vieira in N'Zonzi learning off the original. And As BFS said he likes to get in players that are maybe thought to be at the latter end of their career and get the best of the them.

Bent would be a decent signing, but I wouldn't go any higher than 8m for him. It is even debatable whether he has done enough recently to even justify spending 8m on him - but he's English and relatively young, so I guess that adds a couple of million too.

Personally, I have no interest in Rovers signing either Beattie or Kenwyne Jones. I don't think either are good enough to improve on what we had last season. And we don't need to be spending the kind of money they would cost for sub-standard players.

We have a great chance this summer, with the funds made available by selling players, to really make a statement. Rovers should be doing their utmost to bring in a big-name, proven striker. Not some second-rate cheap alternative.

Last info by email from John Williams was a week before the deadline to renew your own ticket (July 1st). We had sold 12,000 of which 5,000 were new ST's. This meant out of the previous years 13,000 some 6,000 had not renewed at that point. So for 14,500 to be true at least 3 or 4 thousand existing ST's would not have renewed and that sounds a lot.
The club are only advertising the Darwen End in the LET today and not the other stands - still that stupid £150 for 15 games though!

security "most-ever" - if that's a Omen we could break teh record near 20,000 ST's in 1996!

I emailed the ticket office half en hour ago and recieved a swift reply at this moment in time we have sold 14,600 season tickets,I find this a very poor response and blows away any arguments about the Darwen end and does not auger well for an increase in the transfer budget.I think the one pice fits all in the riverside has meant existing ticket holders have moved to the centre.

Eddie - the really weird thing (well apart from it just above!)is that we have sold about 5,000 tickets to new fans. So what has ahppened to the existing ST's who witnessed the atmosphere at the last 3 games and then got a great renewal price? It does not make sense.

I will wager a bet we will have sold more ST's than either Dingles or W*nkies come kick off despite shooting ourselves in the foot with the Darwen End confusion!

just a thought on this, but maybe the several thousand that dont appear to have renewed are in the transfer seat process,if this is the case maybe the club does not count them as "sold" as no seat has been actually allocated yet.could be complete nonsense of course haha or maybe its a tax fiddle and the club have sold more than they are letting on!!!
