Blackburn Rovers striker to get his chance

PAUL Gallagher will be offered a Blackburn Rovers lifeline this summer as Sam Allardyce challenges the striker to ‘show me what you have got’.

Rovers’ home-grown forward has looked destined for an Ewood Park exit, having spent the past two seasons on loan in the Championship, but boss Allardyce will give him the chance to revive his career in East Lancashire.

Several Championship clubs have been circling the Scot, after an impressive campaign with Plymouth last time out, but Gallagher could yet provide Rovers with an answer to their firepower shortage.

The 24-year-old made just one appearance for Rovers last season, a 20-minute substitute’s cameo in the Carling Cup win over Grimsby, before spending the rest of the campaign with the Pilgrims.

He spent the previous season on loan at Preston and then Stoke and has not made a Premier League appearance for Rovers since May 2007, his last goal coming at Everton in January 2007.

Gallagher has been at Ewood since 2002, scoring six senior goals in total, but will get a final chance to stake his claim for a more regular role this pre-season.

With Roque Santa Cruz and Matt Derbyshire heading out of Ewood this summer, Allardyce will be desperate to land a senior striker but Gallagher will feature this pre-season and will bid to show he can be part of the solution.

Rovers though also remain keen on Chelsea’s Argentinean youngster Franco Di Santo and a loan move for him could spell the end for Gallagher.

Any deal for Di Santo is unlikely to go through before the start of pre-season though leaving Gallagher the opportunity to show Allardyce he does provide him with another option.

Preston, Plymouth and Ipswich are all believed to be interested in Gallagher but the striker, who was brought up in Blackburn, would love to remain at Rovers if he had the chance of being involved.

Because they know his talents?

My pet hate is negative "fans"

Give the lad a chance, if he bangs in 5 goals from the bench this season, his price-tag will go up and it will be a lot better business than selling him for peanuts...

On the other hand he is a Blackburn lad, and if it doesnt work out we should wish the best for him, whereever he plys his trade

Not wishing to be cruel, but Gally has already been given several chances and come up wanting. If Sam can get more out of him, then all well and good. Perhaps he's thinking of playing him on the left wing, which may be a good move.
I just hope that this doesn't mean we are no longer pursuing other striking options. If it does, then it will all end in tears!

I'm happy with this news. He has always looked lively when comming on as a sub, and I feel as back-up he can do a job at this level.

He was one of the best strikers in the championship last season, and as I said before him and Franco as back up, may not be ideal, but would be acceptable if we can sort out the main priority - Midfield.

For me he is a far superior player to Derbyshire. I wonder what fans would think if it was the other way round, and Gally was the local lad, with Derbyshire being scottish?

It needs to sink in Mr Costa, that We cannot afford to spend ridiculous money.. To add another striker as good as Gallagher to the team would probably cost 5 million because of the inflated market

2008/09 Plymouth
Appearances: 36(5)
Goals: 13

2007/08 Preston/stoke
Appearances: 17(9)
Goals: 1

2006/07 Blackburn
Appearances: 22(17)
Goals: 2

2005/06 Stoke
Appearances: 41(6)
Goals: 12

As you can see this is his last 4 seasons.. He isnt exactly goal shy, but you have to look at the teams he has played in also. Kevin Doyle scored 23 (I.A.C) last year in 60 games.. He would cost around 5/7 million, and im pretty sure he had better service than Gally.

I dont want to get up your nose Mike, but read between the lines! If Gally can prove himself to be worth at least a place on the bench, he will save us 'bloody fortune

I don't like to knock Rovers players, but Gally simply does not have enough pace and guile in the prem to make it.

He is a greeat striker in the next league down and would be a good acquisition for any of team in the Championship.

If we would have got relegated I would have advocated sticking with Gally.

None of our fellow Prem teams tried to take him on loan, did they. No Fulham, Stoke (in prem) despite his great record for them in Champ, no Hull etc.

We need to wish him well and stop keeping him hanging on. He needs to progress his football elsewhere for his own good and stability.

It doesnt need to sink in with me. I know money is tight. My point is simply that Gally is probably not the answer, and shouldnt be used as an excuse for going out and buying PRUDENTLY. If a direct replacement for Gally will cost 5 mill, which I doubt, then we will need to spend more than the 5 mill.

He is a decent Championship striker who has scored 26 goals out of 94 games over 4 seasons. By way of comparison Martin Patterson has scored 40 goals in the last 3 seasons.

He is a million pound player who will only make the bench if he stays at Ewod next season.

give him a chance during pre-season, but i do not think he is good enough for the prem, even as back up. playing him out on the left could possible work out?

I'm up for giving this lad a chance, always have been, but i'd have rather see Derbyshire stay than him. Maybe the money for Derbs was too good to turn down.

Gally needs to be given a proper chance. Between 6 and 10 games into the season depending on where we are in the league and he needs a good run of games if he's going to be a success.

Just want to say all the best to Derbs too. Cracking lad with the right attitude and respect for our and his beloved club. Lets hope we see him put that Rovers shirt back on in years to come.

I wanted 2 together.
Blackburn end completely sold out. 6 seats (all restricted views), as well as the odd single seat, and plenty in the front 3 rows available in Riverside.
While I was sorting out the paperwork, at least 10 of the Darwen end tickets went.
Ewood is gonna be packed next season!

Gallagher was at Ewood at the start of this season, and was soon shipped out. Think the same will happen again. He is 24, not a kid any more, if he was to come good, brilliant. Just don't think he will!

Crouch is unhappy at Pompey - 8-10 million. No brainer!

Ps. Mike Rover - Gally is from shad!

Marcus28, Manchester says...

Think Gallys fault is he is very light weight. He has been out on loan numerous times be has has not built himself up, he needs get himself him on the weights and get some strength so doesnt get knocked off so easy. If Gally can prove himself then it just means that instead of losing a current memeber and replacing with a loanee from another club and inturn hleping their future team develop we are helping us. Fat Sam is still going buy a striker. If he can prove himself it wont be through pre-season as that proves nothing it be during the season in the bread and butter of the premiership. But I feel if a team made a offer for him that was around one million he would go. I think the reason Derbyshire went was because he didnt want to sit on the bench anymore think Gally would be ok with that and thats he has never left and kept signing new contracts.

Gally has had loads of chances and he's not shown much to suggest he belongs in the Premier League. With Derbyshire I'm sure the money we were offered was the deciding factor in his move.
If we don't want another battle against relegation next season, then we've got to ship the likes of Gallagher out. We need his wages and whatever transfer fee we can get to help bring in players who can actually play a part in the first team.
It's sad when a local player doesn't make it, but we don't have the money for sentiment (as was the case with Tugay).

Sam wont keep him.

If you say "he's part of my plans if he does well at pre-season" talk will boost his sale price.

If he's not wanted, he wont be sold for as much money.

Also if he goes now, people will know how much we need a striker with only 2 strikers, upping the cost of any new strikers clubs charge us.

Its a shame though that we are getting rid of our youth only to look for replacements on loan.

Just feel he his a more rounded player than 'MD'.....

Gally, in the wide position, in relation to 'MD' when he played in that position 'Gally' always produced better results in delivery etc. Gally adapated quickly & got on with the job with 100% commitment. Whereas I felt 'MD' fumbled around or his body language wasn't right & the extreme view - pulled his face!!

I would love Gally to do the business on the level required, in the Prem. For surely if he does produce then BRFC & we the fans will benefit. I'm sure he as the abilty now is the time for him to step up that level.

I always remember Souness saying 'Billy Big Head' over Gally & this stuck in my mind. Souness, to be fair knew what it was to be a winner.

I just hope this situation works out because the benefits would be top.

Givet should be signed up for 1/07/09(approx) as his loan signing doesn't end until end of June. This is only what I have read on here mind!! But I'm sure it will be fine with Givet.

Hi Morst Thanks, had a great Holiday in Lesvos overlooking Tugayland! Yeah, checked that site out but I didn’t register, yet. Definitely worth a couple of season tickets this season -even though I’ll miss quite a few games- not being a “True Blue”! I’ll pass on the substitute role thanks - I’m going to try and make friends this season including HAC!!!! As I see it we need four players -a central battling midfielder who can lay it off to a winger who’s good at crossing (rules Pedersen out!) so Crouchio can head it down for Owenio to knock in onion bag! Simple!!
"Lesvos" marghen!!! Don't tell me the greeks have gone all PC ??????? God help us?
Okay Lesbos to you and me- Before we travelled, wife e-mailed a friend via work e-mail and “Lesbos” was rejected saying use of an inappropriate word!!- they’d have field day with HAC’s language on here lol.

Don’t flatter yourself - can’t be bothered to be honest-to me your opinions are insignificant, anyone who constantly trawls oppositions website with nothing constructive to say, only intent on getting peoples backs up isn’t a true football fan -do yourself a favour and find yourself another hobby!!

hey Robbie I hear City have loads of season tickets left why dont you go and support them. have some faith in our current team and management but in saying that people from manchester hate the gaffer. so I understand your comments TUT TUT
i am not from manchester, i am from blackburn, i just live in manchester. i have seen gally for blackburn right from youth and for preston and i have never been impressed or confident he will make it as a player in the top flight. as for me going to support city.... why because i disagree with you? i did not relise having an a view diffrent to others makes me unloyal or a bad rovers fan i will remember i must follow the crowd, and agree with everyone esle.. Bharrrrr Bharrrr
Robbies is right, we all want Gally to make it and score us penty of goals next season, he's knocked around the lower leagues and done ok, but the prems different and if he was that good we wouldnt have loaned him out. Having said that i wish him all the luck, but we still need to buy a striker.

Hot of the press...

The Times reports that Rovers boss Sam Allardyce is in talks with Oscar Cardozo of Benfica while the club is open to offers for Benni McCarthy

Blackburn believe Carlo Ancelotti will allow Chelsea youngster Franco Di Santo move to Ewood Park on a year-long loan once the striker has completed a pre-season tour with the Blues (Independent).

According to a report in the British tabloid The Daily Mail, Blackburn Rovers are looking to land Dynamo Kiev's Pape Diakhate during the close-season.

The 6ft 1in centre-back is highly-rated and has previously been linked with European heavyweights such as Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Juventus and Lyon.

when the Daily Mail were trying to sell SantaCruz every day they were liars and the dregs of the press. When they report we are going to buy we take it as fact, all transfer speculation is good during the close season but should all be taken with a pinch of salt. The bit I'd lile to beleive is that fat boy Is for sale,I can't beleive anyone would like to see Benni and Roberts next season.

Very poor response Morst i think your right you do need a rest, now off you go on your little holiday with NOS. Unfortunately first reserve Marghen is even more of a lightweight than you and is not up to the challange. Any big bids for any players today LULU.

Marghen, there are some left in there, not sure where though - I blew the idea of sitting there out straight away. I'd get in quick though!
We will see plenty of sell out crowds this season, and with the great prices, even if you only made it to 50% of games - well worth it!

HAC is in Blackburn end...

Eddie - good idea! There is still the partition down the middle of the stand, so no need at all to ever give it all to the opposition. There are so many bowl type stadiums (including the retail park in horwich) that manage to segregate fans easily... mind you, its pretty easy at Bolton, their following is so poor.

Also asked the girl at ticket office which the "4 games" would be... she guessed at Burnley, Man U, Liverpool and City.

£11 million for crouch? get real! This is'nt championship Manager!

We don't hanve much money to spend, and to blown it all on a pretty average striker woulld be a waste, ecpecially when you consider our midfield creates nothing without Tugay, that's where the money needs spending.

Dean Ashton is about to join Stoke on a freebie. Are we just going to sit back and watch?

Now I know he has had injury problems, but considering his main threat is in the air, as well as having a good footballing brain, I doubt it would affect his game too much, seeing as he never had much pace to stat with. A fit Ashton is far superior to Crouch or Beattie. Also he is still only 25, with his best years ahead. Buy of the summer by a country mile in my view.

P.s I know Gally was brought up in the area, but with his Scottish connections, many fans don't seem to have accepted him in the same way as their "local English hero" Derbyshire.

I don't think thats the case MR. Matty was a regular-ish player in the last couple of seasons and scored some class/important goals. Gallagher though, has not played for us for a while and never exactly set Ewood on fire, when he did. Nationality has nothing to do with it.
