Blackburn Rovers fans' St George's flag confiscated in 'racist symbol' row

STEWARDS confiscated football fans’ 10ft flag of St. George, claiming it could be viewed as a ‘racist symbol’.

The group of Blackburn Rovers supporters said they were left stunned by the actions of the officials at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium.

A Blackburn councillor, who is deputy chairman of national patriotic group the Royal Society of St George, said the ‘ridiculous move’ had prevented the fans ‘showing pride in their country’.

Arsenal FC said it had decided to ban all national flags following a row over a fan’s Turkish Cypriot flag in 2006.

Supporters from the Havelock Inn, Havelock Street, Mill Hill, unfurled their English flag, emblazoned with “Havelock Blues”, at the stadium before Saturday’s game.

David Iley, 24, of Bamber Bridge, a regular at the pub who arranged for the flag to be made, said: “When we got there we started putting it out, and the steward came up and told us we couldn’t.

“It never entered my head at first that the St George Cross wasn’t allowed. I thought it was just that we couldn’t put it there.

“So we hooked it over the hoardings at the front instead, and the next thing we know a steward was taking it away, saying it could be seen as a racist symbol.

“I couldn’t believe it. When we took it to Hull the stewards even helped us put it up. It’s the national flag and its absolutely stupid that Arsenal should ban it.”

Since it was made just a month ago, the flag had already travelled to Hull City and Fulham with the pub fans with no problems.

Spokesmen for Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool all confirmed that national flags were allowed at their home grounds.

Coun Williams slammed Arsenal.

He said: “We are planning a St George extravaganza on April 23, and giving out St George’s flags all over town, and yet we have those same English flags being confiscated. It’s ridiculous.

“The one thing we want people to be proud of is being English and people are taking more and more pride in their country.

“These people were expressing that pride in the right way, just like they should be able to do at any time and certainly at any national event.”

An Arsenal spokesman said the ban related a row in December 2006.

An Arsenal Turkish Cypriot season ticket holder riled Greek Cypriot fans by displaying his flag.

As a result, all national flags are now banned at the stadium.

The Arsenal spokesman said: “Arsenal as a club prides itself on being inclusive with respect to all nationalities, cultural and ethnic groups.

“We have therefore decided that in order for all of our fans to enjoy their experience at Emirates Stadium, we are asking that only flags without any national emblems, are displayed within the stadium.”

He added that the ban was lifted for international matches at the ground.”

John Newsham, stadium safety manager at Blackburn Rovers, said: “We would never comment on the policy of other clubs in relation to flags.

“We have an open approach, providing the flags meet set criteria.

"For example, flags are vetted for any inappropriate wording which may be considered offensive by the club or any spectators and they must not be draped over emergency exit signs or advertising hoardings.”

Its nothing to do with English, indeed the explanation is in the article!! A condition of entry into the Emirates (which is private property)is no National flags, not no English flags, none of any country.

If the Havelock Blues had a 10ft blue and white flag with the Blackburn crest on they wouldn't have had to take it down.

I very much suspect that this decision was made by a bunch of arrogant, lefty, liberal do-gooders who thought that they were making the decision on behalf of those they simply felt might be offended! By so doing, they suggest that they know better and is that not an insult in itself to members of other races or groups? It proves that the management at Arsenal are institutionally racist!

it does seem a bit daft to be told city-planto remove the flag....but as the article says there has been issues at the emirates re antagonistic flag waving....so they issued a blanket ban. seems like using a slegehammer to crack a nut, though.
there has been loads of complaints of this in the last couple of years.

would be interested to see whether flags were permitted for the recent brazil vs italy game at the emirates last month. if so, that does point to flouting their own rules.

I remember reading about this a year or so ago -Arsenal Turkish/Cypriot fans kept flying their Northern Cypriot flag at the Emirates- (The country and flag is only recognised in Turkey and Northern Cyprus-all other countries don’t recognise the existents) -it constantly upset the large number of Greek/Cypriots Arsenal fans whose families had lost land, livelihoods and some cases lives after the invasion of the Island- in effect causing tension in the stadium -The Arsenal Board not wanting to be seen as racists or siding with one particular group decided to put a blanket ban on all Countries Fags to avoid any tension/trouble in the stadium. So its nothing anti English -sad though!

Monte, Barrowford/Montenegro says...

NO NO NO! This is pathetic. This s actually fueling racism rather than combating racism.

I am an expat living in Montenegro and each day i see Montenegrin and Serbian flags flown proudly.

I have a British friend here, from his time in Tazmania was presented with a Tazmanian flag. Which he flew at his house in Montenegro. The authorities insisted it was taken down, as it was not Montenegrin or Serbian. Fair enough.

But how is the British Government getting justifying this, this is not racism, this is patriotism? Huge difference. This is the countries national flag, not a racist symbol! This is infuriating and breeds racism!

When in Rome do as the Romans do! Why cant others follow this rule on entry in to the UK?

Why should we have to change to suit others in our own country?

To really understand where this has come from you have to understand the situation of the area. In a 5 mile radius of the stadium is a large Cypriot community that came to England at the time of the Turkish occupation of Northern Cyprus. Many of those families lost everything as they were forced out. A two mile area is predominately Cypriot and racial tension between the two groups is just under the surface. When the Turkish flag was displayed there was an upturn in problems in the area. Arsenal consulted with the local police , the local councils and eventually with the Home Office and they were advised to ban the flag. Had they just banned that one and allowed the Greek cypriot one to fly the problem would have been reversed. The people involved were asked not bring their flags into the ground but they bought in human rights lawyers to argue that Arsenal could not just ban one or two flags. At this point all flags were banned. Unfortunately your piece did not actually investigate the background and I as an Arsenal season ticket holder am sorry for the problems caused to the Blackburn fans, but at least now you know the reasons behind it.I think you could say that The Arsenal were in between a rock and a hard place.

As for flags.... on the mountain range looking out from North Cyprus is the world's largest flag.... can be seen from the Greek side of Nicosia..... it is larger than the Emirates football stadium.... i think you can also see it on google earth......

as for the London Cypriots.. i hear they get on well... but it does seem that the political correctness of the UK has gone silly... what do they ban next to not upset the opposing team.... no scarves at the next Burnley v Preston match......?

anyway... have a look at the flag in North Cyprus... google earth.... it's painted on the mountain....

I don't know why there is a strong Italian community so someone else will have to fill us in. I have a friend who's parents arrived in Darwen from Birmingham because bus drivers were in great demand and Blackburn Council had advertised in papers up and down the country to encourage drivers to come to the Blackburn and Darwen areas.
There are many foreigners here who have settled well and have found work so there will always be a mixture of cultures for which i am thankful because i wouldn't have found my greatest friend and we both don't go with all this flag flying stuff when it has never been the norm to fly the flag on St Georges day in all the years we have lived here.

Blondie.
Thanks for the info.

I now live in Tenerife and flag flying out here is not an issue, with only the Spanish and Canary Flags being flown over national buildings.
Whilst Nationalism is important, Canarians celebrate Church Saint days with a fiesta every other week and of course a party but no animosity from any of the many cultures here and on these occasions the only flags flown are church orientated ones.
