ROVERS 3 BURNLEY 2 – OCTOBER 18 2009

THIS was the first Premier League meeting between the two sides, and the first time they had met in the top flight of English football since 1966.

The game didn’t disappoint in front of 26,689 fans at Ewood Park.

Robbie Blake handed the visitors an early lead, but that lasted just four minutes as David Dunn, a regular scorer in this fixture, levelled for Rovers.

And before half-time the hosts had established a 3-1 lead courtesy of goals from Franco Di Santo and Pascal Chimbonda.

There was time for a Burnley response through a late Chris Eagles goal, but that would prove to be a mere consolation as Rovers took the points.

ROVERS 5-0 BURNLEY – APRIL 1 2001

FOR the visiting supporters they would have been forgiven for thinking this was some sort of April fools.

For Rovers fans, this was ecstasy.

Wins don’t come much better, or sweeter, than putting five unanswered goals past your fierce rivals.

In the first meeting at Ewood Park between the sides in 18 years, Rovers were 2-0 up at the break courtesy of Craig Short and a Steve Davis own goal.

After the break things got even better for the home side with Matt Jansen scoring a brace and Craig Hignett rounding off the scoring eight minutes from time.

That win helped Rovers achieve promotion to the Premier League as they ended the campaign runners-up to Fulham,

ROVERS 2 BURNLEY 0 - MARCH 1960

A CUP tie to remember for Rovers fans.

The last eight clash in the FA Cup had gone to a reply after Rovers came from 3-0 down with 15 minutes to go at Turf Moor to earn a draw and a second shot at reaching the semi-finals.

It was one they didn't turn down as extra time strikes from Peter Dobing and Ally McLeod sent them through in front of a bumper Ewood Park crowd of 53,839.

Rovers went on to beat Sheffield Wednesday to reach the final but they lost 3-0 to Wolves at Wembley in a match remembered for Dave Whelan's broken leg.
