TONY Mowbray believes a loan move to Rovers gives loan signing Marcus Antonsson the perfect platform to prove himself in English football.

Antonsson arrived from Leeds on a season-long loan last Friday, but wasn’t involved in the squad for the home defeat to Doncaster Rovers.

He scored three times in 21 appearances for Leeds last season, after a £2million move from Kalmar.  And Mowbray hopes a spell in East Lancashire will help Antonsson find his feet in English football.

“A Swede coming over and seeing an opportunity at Leeds United that didn’t quite materialise for him,” Mowbray said.

“I haven’t given him any false promises - I’m not telling him he’s going to be the King of Blackburn - he has to work hard, score goals, be part of a team and wait for his chances.

“It’s down to him. But he wants to prove that he can be successful in England, he wants to prove that he can score goals when given the chance and that’s what we aim to do.

“We’ll give him an opportunity moving forward. There’s a lot of games to share around and hopefully he can make a big impact.”

Leeds were prompted to splash out the reported fee on Antonsson after he scored 22 goals in 40 games for Swedish top-flight side Kalmar.

Antonsson will hope, after a full week’s training under his belt, that he can be included in the Rovers squad for the first time when they head to Bradford City on Saturday.

And Mowbray is in no doubt that the Swedish frontman can add quality, and competition, to a Rovers forward line which includes Danny Graham and Dominic Samuel.

“He knows where the back of the net is. He’s got two good feet - he’s predominantly left-footed and yet he scores a lot of goals with his right foot as well,” Mowbray told the club's official website.

“He controls and plays the ball off his right side very easily and comfortably. And he’s got a lovely personality.

“As I said, he wants to show everybody that he can do it in England and we’ve got to try and use that appetite to benefit the team.”
