BLACKBURN Rovers wide man Elliott Bennett is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Liam Feeney as he targets a chance in the starting XI.

The winger was an unused substitute at Newcastle United on Saturday and hasn’t started a Championship game since the opening day of the season.

But the 27-year-old is hoping a patient approach will pay off and is taking solace in Feeney’s rise into Owen Coyle’s team.

The former Bolton man started his first league match since the defeat at Wigan in August when he featured in the victory over Brentford last time out.

The 30-year-old kept his place in the side for the win over the Magpies and Bennett admits he can’t argue with being left out at the moment.

“The manager wanted to try and have a couple of players for each position and we have got that now,” said the former Norwich winger.

“There is not a lot I can say when the players are playing well and winning.

“We have got fantastic wingers at the club. The lads who are in the team at the minute deserve the place in the team because they are playing well and winning “All I can do is work hard in training and keep your fitness up and when you get your chance take it.

“Liam is an example, he has had to be patient for large parts of the season so far and he has stayed fit and trained really well and goes into the team and doesn’t look out of place. It is just about staying patient.”

Bennett will likely have to make do with a place on the bench when Huddersfield Town come to Ewood Park on Saturday but he is confident Rovers can make it three straight league wins for the first time since March 2015.

He added: “We are confident and we can go into it on the back of two good wins and get a third.

“We showed on Saturday that this league is so unpredictable.

“I think it showed a different side to us. We have played well in a lot of games and maybe not got the points we have deserved.

“On Saturday we were thoroughly organised, highly resolute and we limited probably the best team in the league to very few chances.

“It was a fully professional performance, that is what you have to do when you go to a crowd of 52,000. I think everyone in the country expected Newcastle to win the game other than everyone in our camp.

“We were quietly confident and the lads executed the plan perfectly and we got the win.”
