BLACKBURN Rovers boss Owen Coyle has told winger Martin Samuelsen he will get a chance to impress.

Samuelsen has played just eight minutes of league football for Rovers after signing on a season-long loan from West Ham United seven weeks ago.

And the 19-year-old went public with his desire for more game time before scoring his first international goal for Norway in midweek.

But Coyle insists Samuelsen, who started the EFL Cup loss at Leeds United last month, will be given an opportunity.

And, with Ben Marshall set to move to right-back in place of suspended captain Jason Lowe, that opportunity could come in tomorrow’s home clash with Ipswich Town.

Coyle said: “I spoke to Martin before he went away because we’ve brought him into play. His opportunity will come because he’s a wonderfully talented player.

“I spoke to him before he went to Norway and said, ‘if you get your chance, go and impress’, and he got the last 25-30 minutes and scored a very good goal.

“Confidence wise he’ll be in a very good place because of that.

“He’s always in our thoughts because he’s one of those wide players who can take people on.

“We also have Jason Lowe suspended at the weekend so we need to tweak one or two things anyway and those wide players, whether it be Samuelsen, (Elliott) Bennett, (Liam) Feeney, they will all come into our thinking.

“And certainly young Martin has done himself no harm at all with how he’s trained prior to going away and how he did with his national side.”

Travelling supporters were left to wonder why Samuelsen did not get off the bench in the 1-0 defeat at Birmingham City before the international break after Marvin Emnes followed fellow forward Danny Graham and midfielder Corry Evans down the tunnel injured.

Coyle insists the substitutions he made were forced upon him and stressed that the teenager will not have to wait long for his next appearance.

“We brought Martin here because we feel he can have a role to play,” said Coyle.

“As regards to why he didn’t come on (against Birmingham) the injuries were to strikers and to Corry Evans a midfielder so for me that was self-explanatory.

“Martin’s came on in a few of the games and I think he probably needs, like most boys do, a run in the team in terms of extended game time.

“And I think that’s not too far away from him because of the quality he has.

“I speak to him every day so he knows exactly how we’re thinking and how we bring them along.

“We’ve had very good success over many, many years with young players we bring in.

“We bring them in at the right time, we nurture them and when they’re ready to play we know when to put them in.

“Samuelsen is one of those and I truly believe when he gets in and gets an extended run he’ll probably find he’ll be in there for a long haul.”
