IT is hard for Blackburn Rovers supporters to find rays of sunshine when their side remain bottom of the standings and the only one in the Championship yet to win seven games into the season.

For the players, though, they have to cling on to any positives, however small, after what has been a miserable start.

For new left-back Derrick Williams it is the fact that, after three abject defeats to kick-off the campaign, they believe they have begun to play better.

It was not good enough, though, to beat fellow strugglers Leeds United where another late goal condemned Rovers to a devastating 2-1 defeat.

And it is a defeat which has upped the ante going into tomorrow’s home clash with another team at the wrong end of the table, Rotherham United.

But Williams, one of Rovers’ best performers at Elland Road, insists the players are not feeling the pressure.

“Not really because we know we are good enough,” said the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international, one of 12 summer arrivals at Ewood Park.

“We should be top half of the table. We all know that. It’s just getting that first win.

“Not making excuses but we’ve only started playing together a lot of us and you can see in our performances we are getting better.

“Once we get that first win we can kick on.”

Rovers had hoped their maiden victory would have arrived on Tuesday.

And, after substitute Marvin Emnes stepped off the bench to fire in his first goal for the club since signing on loan from Swansea City, they pushed hard for it.

But for the third time in the last four league matches they conceded a goal after the 86-minute mark which handed Leeds all three points.

“Gutted,” was how Williams described the feeling in the Rovers dressing room after Kyle Bartley’s 86th-minute winner.

“We reacted well after they scored and I think everyone thought we were going to push on and get the goal.

“We’ve got to keep going, keep our heads up, and look forward to Saturday. We have to get the three points.

“I think once they come we will be fine. It’s just getting that first win.

“We know it’s all about winning but the only positive thing is we are playing half-decent.

“We go again and we have to try and stay positive. We know it’s a massive game Saturday, we’re all looking forward to it, and I think we’re going to get the three points.”

And a message for the Rovers fans?

“Stick by us,” said Williams.

“Hopefully if you’ve come to watch us play you can see we are performing better.

“I can guarantee when we get that win we will push on. Stick with us because we’re going to hopefully get that first win.”
