FREE-SCORING Blackburn Rovers Ladies continued their fantastic form with a superb 5-1 home victory over defending FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division champions West Brom.

Fresh from their 19-0 FA Women’s Premier League Cup rout of Rotherham United one week earlier, Gemma Donnelly’s side were comfortable winners once more thanks to a brace apiece from Ella Toone and Saffron Jordan and a headed goal from Faye McCoy.

Before kick-off a minute’s silence was held to remember Sylvia Gore MBE, an ambassador for ladies football, who passed away last week.

Once the game got under way it was Rovers who were swiftly in the ascendency, taking the lead after 13 minutes.

A quick free kick saw the ball played to Toone down the left and she beat her marker before cutting inside and finding the bottom corner.

Jordan was then denied by a smart close-range save but on 28 minutes she got the goal she deserved, showing quick reactions to fire home after Danielle Whitham’s well-struck shot was not held.

West Brom pulled a goal back almost immediately from the penalty spot after Kayleigh McDonald was adjudged to have fouled an Albion player in the box. Trina Greaves found the back of the net from 12 yards despite the best attempts of goalkeeper Danielle Hill, who got a hand to the spot-kick.

Rovers should have restored their two-goal advantage before the break but they were twice denied by the woodwork with Toone seeing a shot strike the post before a long-range McCoy effort clipped the top of the bar.

But their third goal did arrive in the 52nd minute. McCoy floated the ball into the area for Jordan and she nodded down for Toone who grabbed her second with a composed finish.

Three became four soon after when McCoy flicked the ball into the net after latching on to a long McDonald free kick.

That put clear daylight between the two sides but West Brom’s task was made all the more difficult when Greaves was sent off after being shown a second yellow card.

And the closing stages saw Rovers take advantage of the space afforded to them to grab a fifth goal, Toone turning provider to feed fellow forward Jordan who grabbed her second of the match with a fine lob.
