GOOD on Owen Coyle for sticking to his guns when it comes to Grant Hanley, writes Simon Garner.

Grant is an important player for the club. He’s the captain and a Scotland international with 200 games under his belt.

So there’s no way Rovers should be looking to sell for £4.5m.

For me you’re looking more at £6m-£6.5m.

There’s a lot of money knocking around Newcastle United and you’ve got to remember home-grown players come at a premium as they are in short supply.

Newcastle are a big club who are spending big money.

I wouldn’t have thought Rafa Benitez would have stayed there if he didn’t think he could take them straight back up.

I wouldn’t blame Grant if he wanted to go there but at the end of the day he’s under contract at Rovers and Owen is right to stand firm.

Owen is thinking about himself, because he will not want to lose his captain, and he’s also thinking about the football club, and getting Grant’s true valuation.

It’s a juggling act for Rovers at the moment.

Yes they’ve got to cut costs but they’ve also got to try and keep their best players.

It’s okay saying that players come and go but Owen is trying to get a squad together that’s going to give it a go this season.

His signings so far have been very good and if he can keep most of the current squad together then you never know, Rovers may just get off to a flying start.

And, if that happens, and they get that bit of momentum, then who knows what comes next?

But it will be harder to get off to a good start if there’s unrest with players at your football club.

That’s why I hope all this business gets sorted one way or the other soon.

Grant staying would be great but if he is to go, it’s got to be for better money than what Newcastle are currently offering.

So fair play to Owen for standing up to them. He’s playing it right.
