WIGAN Athletic are reportedly attempting to re-sign former Blackburn Rovers loanee Jordi Gomez.

The 31-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Ewood Park from Sunderland and scored three goals in 19 games including stunning strikes on his debut at Middlesbrough and at home to MK Dons.

But there is no indication that new Rovers boss Owen Coyle will try to sign Gomez, who he managed during the playmaker’s first spell at Wigan, on a permanent deal.

However reports have suggested that current Latics manager Gary Caldwell is interested in the Spanish midfielder.

Earlier this year Caldwell admitted he was offered Gomez before he joined Rovers in January.

“Jordi’s agent did give us a call, and it was there,” said the former Scotland international, who led Wigan back into the Championship at the first attempt by winning League One.

“But I felt we were fine in that area, and financially it was a difficult one to do.

“Jordi is a player I obviously played with, and know the quality he has.

“It would have been great to have him back but it wasn’t to be.

“I work for the football club, and I have to do the right thing for the football club – that’s what I get paid to do.

“If it doesn’t make sense financially, then we’re not going to do it.

“We have to work within certain budgets, and we have done that.”

But Caldwell did leave the door open to a possible summer move providing Wigan won promotion.

He said: “You never know, in football you have to be open to everything.

“We’ll look at that in the summer, when hopefully we will have that problem.”

Caldwell has already signed former Rovers left-back Stephen Warnock from Derby County.
