ALL this talk about a potential takeover does not detract from the fact that Rovers need a new manager – and fast.

Alan Irvine and Rob Kelly may still be there, and we should be grateful for that, but it doesn’t sound like they want the manager’s job, and once a new manager comes in, who knows if he’ll want to bring in his own staff?

There’s so much still up in the air.

This is the time of the year when players to start to learn whether they are released or not. As a manager you want to be at the front of that queue.

And we’ve also got players out of contract and players going back to their parent clubs who won’t have a clue what their future holds.

The club can take advice from Alan and Rob, and that’s fine, but the new manager will have his own ideas.

That’s why Rovers need a new man in place in the next fortnight at the latest.

But it’s important the club makes the right appointment. The new manager must want the job for the right reasons and not just because it’s a job.

I still maintain Paul Lambert was the right appointment.

If promises that were made to him would have been kept then I’m sure he would have taken the club forward.

But it’s clear now the money is just not there.

That’s why Venky’s have got to listen to any proposals that come their way.

It’s obvious from what the club has said that there are going to be cutbacks and that the owners are no longer willing to push the boat out.

So they’ve got to listen to all the people who are interested in getting involved with it.

If somebody offers them X-million pound that would allow the club to improve the budget, then they have to listen.

Whether it’s Ian Battersby and Ian Currie, or anybody else, Venky’s have got to see what options they’ve got, because at the moment, the club is going backwards.

Rovers need to get going again, and they need to get people into the football club who understand football.

And they can start that by appointing the right manager.
