It was rich reward for the fine form the 25-year-old has shown this season both at right-back and further up field.

Marshall, who is Rovers’ joint six-goal top-scorer with Danny Graham, said: “It’s a good achievement and I’m really happy, it has been a good season for me personally.

“Obviously there’s been ups and downs but it’s been good for me playing in a different position and I’ve enjoyed it.”

Scott Wharton was also celebrating after winning the young player of the year award.

The 18-year-old was the captain of the Rovers side which reached the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup.

And he is also expected to lead the club in Tuesday’s Under-21 Premier League Division Two play-off semi-final at Arsenal.

Rovers’ head of sports medicine, Dave Fevre, was named clubman of the year, and Lynda Shepherd picked up the inaugural ladies player of the year award.

The players posed for photographs and signed autographs before the award-winning quartet took centre stage.
