DEFENDER Matt Kilgallon says Blackburn Rovers have fallen short in what he admits has been a disappointing season for the club and for himself.

Rovers will go into Saturday’s trip to revived Rotherham United on the back of a six-match winless sequence which has left them 18th and one point above fourth-from-bottom Fulham.

Paul Lambert’s side had the chance to end that run on Saturday when they took a deserved one-goal lead into half-time in their home clash with fellow strugglers Bristol City.

But in the end they had Danny Graham to thank for rescuing a point which mathematically secured their survival after poor defending allowed the Robins to turn the game on its head.

And Kilgallon said: “I thought we were good in the first half, we played the ball around well and we got ourselves into the lead.

“Then second half it was just bad goals to give away again. I just don’t know what’s happening there but we need to stop it.

“The gaffer is not happy with the goals we’re letting in and he’s completely right.

“We’ve had a few sending offs lately, and that didn’t help, but we just can’t seem to finish a game off and get a win.

“But with our players we should be finishing games off and in the second half it wasn’t good enough and we got punished for it.

“We should be doing better than what we are. We’ve got the players here.

“But that doesn’t matter, you’ve got to do it out on the pitch. We know we can do it and we need to try and do it in these last couple of games.”

With Tommy Spurr sidelined Kilgallon was making his fourth straight start out of position at left-back.

But having been restricted to nine appearances all the season, the centre-back is just glad to be back out of the pitch.

Kilgallon said: “It’s been a disappointing season for me really to be honest.

“I’ll do whatever I can to get games and the gaffer has asked me to play out of position at left-back.

“But at least I’m out there and trying my best for my team. It’s just nice to be back out there playing football.”

Kilgallon is one of eight first-team players – along with Spurr, Simon Eastwood, Lee Williamson, Chris Taylor, Chris Brown, Simeon Jackson and Nathan Delfouneso – out of contract in the summer.

But the 32-year-old, who joined Rovers three years ago from Sunderland, has no idea whether he will be getting a new deal.

Kilgallon said: “I wish I could tell you. I haven’t a clue if the club want to keep me or not.

“It’s a great club and if I was a younger lad I may be panicking by now, but I’m older now and what will be will be.”

Saturday’s two-goal hero Graham, who is loan from Sunderland, is also hoping Rovers will hand him a permanent contract.

And Kilgallon, who played alongside the striker at the Black Cats, said: “He’s been great. He’s full of energy, full of experience and he’s shown what a good finisher he is.

“He’s a good player and hopefully we can get him in the summer. He’s a good lad who always scores goals so he’d be a great signing for the club.”
