BLACKBURN Rovers boss Paul Lambert has clarified his comments over the need for a better Ewood Park pitch.

Lambert brought up the subject in his post-match press conference after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest where he highlighted the quality of the City Ground surface.

And yesterday he said: “I made that an example because the fact’s there. Nottingham Forest’s pitch was voted third in the league behind Middlesbrough and Derby.

“It’s no disrespect to the groundsman here, they work ever so hard, but to get anything better you need to invest in it. It’s not rocket science. It’s a barefaced fact.

“You don’t make it an excuse but if you have a good pitch it certainly helps you and some of the football we played the other night was very good.

“They tell me the pitch at Ewood was voted the pitch of the Premier League when we were in it. It can be done if it’s looked after.”

Rovers have not had a brand new pitch in more than 20 years. Instead their groundsman take the top off it every summer and reseed it.

They are also hoping the club’s owners Venky’s will fund the purchase of larger lighting rigs which will help grow the grass on the pitch through the winter.

But the surfaces at the senior training centre and Academy are in the process of being reseeded.

Lambert added: “You want everything to be right and you want that ambition to go up and give it a right good go.

“Like I’ve always said, there’s only two scenarios, you either get up automatically or you get in the play-offs.

“There’s things here over the course of time that need rectifying.”
