BLACKBURN Rovers may boast one of the best defensive records in the Championship.

But one of the men chiefly responsible for that admits it is counting for little.

Only today’s opponents Middlesbrough and Hull City have conceded fewer league goals than Rovers this season.

But Paul Lambert’s side will head up to Riverside Stadium chasing their first Championship win in eight matches after a run of four draws and three defeats.

And Rovers goalkeeper Jason Steele: “From a personal level we’ve got one of the best defensive records in the league and that’s what I’d look as a goalkeeper, obviously.

“But records mean nothing and stats mean nothing if you’re not winning football matches and we haven’t done that enough in the league over the past six or seven games.

“We’ve got to turn that around.”

Rovers, though, are unbeaten in three matches in all competitions after a draw at fellow strugglers Charlton Athletic was sandwiched between FA Cup wins over Newport County and Oxford United.

And Steele said: “There’s a lot of players coming in and hopefully they can add to what we have and we can build on what the manager is trying to do.

“The last few games hopefully can be a bit of a turning point for us.”

The winds of change may be blowing through Rovers but Steele has cemented his place as the club’s number one by keeping nine clean sheets in 25 appearances.

And he said: “It was a kick in the teeth when I didn’t start the season but I had a point to prove and when I got back in the team I think I did it.”
