GARY Bowyer felt Blackburn Rovers fully deserved their dramatic 1-1 draw at high-flying Hull City yesterday.

But the Rovers boss was far from happy with the officials after their failure to spot a clear foul on last-gasp hero Jordan Rhodes led to Hull opening the scoring in the hard-fought KC Stadium clash.

There were 73 minutes on the clock when Rhodes was brought down clean through on goal by Tigers centre-back Curtis Davies who was already on a booking.

But referee Andy Haines adjudged Davies to have won the ball and relieved Hull raced down the other end of the field to break the deadlock through top-scorer Abel Fernandez.

However their hopes of recording a sixth win from the seven games they have now played at home this season were dashed when Rovers’ leading marksman Rhodes marked his 150th appearance for the club with an injury-time headed equaliser.

Bowyer, whose side are now unbeaten in three matches, said: “I think anyone who has been at the game and who answers honestly will say that we worth a point.

“We came to a difficult place and in the first half took the game to Hull and performed ever so well.

“We knew there would be spells when we’d have to dig in and show resilience – and I think we showed that.

“But it just goes to show the levels of performances the lads are hitting at the moment because, when you look at the experience and the expense of that Hull side, we were quite comfortable.

“And that is why we were so disappointed with the manner of their goal.

“We pressed them well, won the ball, Jordan’s through and Curtis Davies has brought him down – and it’s as simple as that. The referee then has got to send him off.

“So we were disappointed that didn’t happen, that we didn’t get the free kick, and that they went straight down the other end and scored.

“But again you see the response and the character the lads have got. We showed great character to get the equaliser and we went on again and could have won it.

“It was a great finish from Jordan, particularly at that stage of the game. Allan McGregor made a good save from him first half, and he missed a left-foot volley second half, but you always know he’s going to get another chance, and we constantly say that to him.

“He just keeps getting in the box. He’s a wonderful finisher.”

Both sides had chances to win it with substitute Hope Akpan going close for Rovers before Davies headed wide for the Tigers.

“Hope’s caught it ever so well and it’s half got stuck under McGregor’s legs a little bit,” said Bowyer.

“Then at the other end it’s a free header, but I think on reflection a point each is a fair reflection of the game.”

Hull boss Steve Bruce, whose team remain fourth after a second straight home league draw, agreed.

But he was left to bemoan the defending that allowed Rhodes, a player he tried to sign last summer, to notch his fifth goal in his last four matches.

Bruce said: “They’ve got two giants of centre-backs who my centre-backs have to pick up, and we’re left with a full-back picking him (Rhodes) up. Moses (Odubajo) has switched off. He (Rhodes) does what he does. He finds a bit of room in the box.

“Then, from the goalkeeper not making a save, he’s had to pull off a world-class save to keep it at one each. I think that (a defeat) would have been harsh. I don’t think we deserved to lose it.”
